What rubbish Brendan said no to the commite thing! He has final say on all signings
The question is, did "Being Liverpool" gain the club new fans across the footballing world?
Answer: quite likely
Did "Being Liverpool" cost the club any of the existing fanbase?
Answer: almost certainly not - and if it did, then they're not the sort of fans we want on board.
================================
The real question you have to ask is:
"Was making our manager look like a David Brent-a-like worth the extra income it generated for the club, given that the publicity it generated could well have had a detrimental effect on his authority seeing that the players can then see that the general consensus is that he's been made a laughing stock?"
You're dealing with young men earning more money than they could ever realistically spend, and you need to know that the players have respect for you and believe in what you're trying to do.
When a programme gets that much insight in to the world of football and the rest of the world gets a glimpse of the ridiculous circus show that is top level football, the real world takes notice and rightly points out what a mockery the whole thing is. Not just Liverpool but football in general.
Unfortunately we were the subject of that documentary and therefore most of the attention it breeds belongs to us.
I'm quite happy for the club to try and generate income any way they can as long as it doesn't affect what goes on on the pitch, and I genuinely think that Being Liverpool could have damaged Rodgers' reputation, and harmed the authority he has over the players.
Even if it hasn't, the programme was utter wánk. It was cringeworthy and not something I wanted to be associated with as a fan.

Brendan said no to a director of football but from the very first press conference they talked about the long term aim to get a team in place. They confirmed this a few months after and FSG had apologised to fans for not having a team in place which led to our disaster January Window.
Brendan then said leading up to Janauary that the team is in place now and he will look to sign players. He signed players. It seems to work.
The fact that 3 of the 4 major signings this season have previously worked with BR would suggest that BR still holds the most influence when it comes to recruitment. This, in my opinion, is how it should be.
As for Being:Liverpool, I thought the programme was cringeworthily embarrassing. Maybe that's because I have an inbuilt distaste for American production values, where they disguise the lack of intelligent content with prolonged slow-mos and non-sensical verbosity. It was also unintentionally hilarious - scenes like BR discussing with Joe Allen what number he wanted to wear or Ian Ayre driving his chopper through the streets of Liverpool wouldn't look out of place in The Office.

Yeah well I hate chick flicks but they still do what they set out to do and that's make money.
I remember watching the episode with Jay Spearing showing the camera round his mini-mansion and him driving round in a top of the range X5 and I had to turn it off in disgust.
I can cope with average footballers earning obscene wages as long as I never have to think about it and realise how ridiculously wealthy these guys are for being decent at kicking a ball around.

Being Liverpool was a three envelope trick
I liked the envelope thing. Obviously there were no names but if there were most people would agree Downing would be amongst them. It looks like he didn't leave it to chance, his form picked up. Whether that played a part we don't know. Was it staged? Possibly. One thing is for sure, it did what it set out to do and that's to increase publicity in the US and with it, revenue for the club.

What about BR's 'three names that will let us down this season in this envelope'
=================================
This is the type of thing I mean. Even supposing they were dumb enough to fall for a písspoor motivational tool like that, one look in the paper after it aired and they can see that it's being widely ridiculed.
Some of those players must've just thought, "Yeah, you know what, he is a bit of a tít." and you're struggling to keep their respect then.
Would Fergie have ever got involved with something like that?

You're a one-trick pony Fella
Did it improve the image? What would have? Football fans are tribal, they wouldn't allow it, they'll see the bad, intact they'll search for it,eeven create it. But who needs enemies ey?
Allen and borini were poor signings from his former club!
But courtinho and sturridge to a certain degree were goo signings!
This summer will decide Brendan's and FSG's real intent

It wasn't just opposition fans that had a poor opinion of it. A fairly large section of your own fan base thought it was terrible too. The only people it appealed to were the Americans, but was that at the expense of some of your other fans?

If we only picked a bit of interest then it has worked. That interest can grow.

Depends what you lost in the process. An actual documentary made for football fans, that was unpatronising and well made, would have been far better. It shouldn't have just been used to pick up on the US market, it could easily have gained you far more respect from other clubs if done right.
I understand people think it was terrible, they're entitled to that. However I thought it was good tv and did what it set out to.
