You all notice his tackling ability and forward play but he is prone to lazyness and non tracking of runners at times

Vertonghen currently is our best defender because at this moment in time, Kaboul is an absolute crock so can't count for anything. If and when Kabs gets back to full fitness then we will have one of the best centre back partnerships in England with Vertonghen and Kaboul. People on here really don't appreciate how superb Vertonghen is when it comes to last ditch tackling. Everyone is quick to say he's great offensively and suspect defensively but completely forget how many times he has saved us with world class last ditch tackles. That one against Qpr on Cisse was just as good as anything Ledley King has ever done.

----

its just the classic point about truly top defenders never really needing to make last ditch tackles(unless its on the cover) as they are rarely (if ever) out of position

that said i think he is a very good tackler.. its the other aspects of his game that he needs to work on (marking, positioning)

If we learned how to defend set plays, this article would be irrelevant and we'd be looking forward to CL football.

4-3-3

Dembele-sandro-vert

Just feel it would work and if we were winning we could shut up shop very easily. ( not that I would like to see that)

if you play 3 in midfield then one has to be a creative player/goal getter...

out of those three who is that?

Couldn't agree more.

I really like vert but our defence does seem to get caught out a lot, hence the need for last ditch tackles.

The problem we had last season Chronic, no Modric in the side or Dembele we lose that edge of creativity and lack and forward play

I personally think Holtby will nail CAM this season, he was brilliant at times for Germany, went missing but with the right support around him he can be great there

Look like, I like you, you're one of the best posters on here. But sometimes you do speak some bo11 ocks. Verts should be nowhere near our midfield, especially with our reported interest in the likes of Paulinho, Guarin, etc... He would be behind Dembele, Sandro, Holtby as well in the pecking order, and we 100% need him at the back

You cant discredit Kaboul because a couple of stats from WhoScored? made Vertonghen seem otherwise.

If caught out, Kaboul has the speed to recover, which isnt really needed as he is rarely caught out. He is literally a beast in the air, gets everything and would 100% sort out our set piece problems, remember his defensive header 2/3 seasons ago vs Newcastle? One of the best clearances I have ever seen. He is good, very good in the tackle, but rarely gets himself into the trouble to have to save himself with these last gasp tackles like Vert does. He is also pretty good on the ball which is why he did a good stint for us at RB. There isnt a lot of defenders in this league I really rate but Kaboul is definitely one of them. He isnt one of those new age defenders where it is attack first defend later.

Edin, I've always thought Kaboul was overrated personally. Had one good season, but other than that he's been no more than decent

the first person i have seen aggresively challenge LLM... wil be interested to see how this one ends up... i actually agree with analog in that verts should not be a starting midfielder next season, and also LLM's opinion that livermore will become a top class centre back also seems odd to me... Livermore is just a bit crap unfortunately

Kaboul hasn't played for a year. You simply cannot say he's better than Verts.

IMO, Verts is a CB, and a damn good one. Why are people talking about moving him in to midfield?! DAFUQ?!

Lloris is pretty quick, we should use him as backup for Lennon on the wing

Kaboul 2 seasons ago >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vertonghen last season...

unless all you look for is your cbs to score goals? in which case kaboul is still better for getting the winner at the deathstar

I agree Holtby will be excellent next year. He was a bit hit & miss this year, but I think he was rushed into coming over due to an insane amount of injuries, then was mostly used as a sub / filling in for people. Hopefully we get to see him properly in his own role as it were.
