I wouldn't be confident against any team at the moment.
As has been said, that Russia result was abysmal.
Funny how the team that started that game, are still seen as our best bet in the next round.

To be honest, even with teams sitting back, drawing due to a last minute goal, winning due to a last minute goal and then a 0-0 draw doesn't inspire much confidence. I've not been as impressed with the performances as some have.
Italy were my pick for the final - the most compact and complete team there to be honest.
mind you, won't really be surprised when the germans work out a way to undo them.
Plus Croatia played much better, as a team, throughout the group stage. And that is what counts to me.
As for the crap spouted about spain pre-tournament, it was never gonna happen. Bang average (or the genuine quality ones being too old) all over the park + no real goalkeeper to speak of.

interesting that belgium benefit from being embarrassed by italy, whereas italy's reward for winning the group with a game to spare is to face spain, followed by germany.
I can't really work out how they came up with the knockout stages, it seemed pre weighted in some groups favour anyway.

And E and F get a second placed team?

Their Quarter is potentially Belgium or Portugal. But it could still be Hungary/Iceland or Sweden/Ireland

Yep. The template for working it out looks to be the same that they used for the WC in 1986. And presumably 1990 and 1994.
Was it not just a random draw for the groups? As in, top six seeds or winners from the qualifying groups? (should be the latter, really)

i'm going to be out in italy for the semis, but given they have to get through spain and germany just to get there i fear that my personal interest in the tournament will be over by then (assuming that france do a number on england).
Could they not do a drawer after the group stages? I don't see it being that much harder logistically.
Also Portugal have been shocking so far. Would fancy plenty of teams over them.
