You'd have expected the Republicans to turn away from Trump after the Capitol Hill attack but cult of personality is too strong

Biden has very low ratings and boris was up against Corbyn....hence artificial popularity, as it was least worst option for millions, imo.

Trump is only a passing fancy for republicans, (and the jury is out on Trump the "republican consevative" who were there before Donald, and will be when he moves on.

Boris will move along if labour get good leadership....or, if tories turn on him beforehand, as DGL alluded to.

Ms Webbe is appealing, so won't face a recall yet. But if her appeal is unsuccessful, a by-election could be triggered. However, her Leicester East seat is safe for now as nothing happens until all appeal routes have been exhausted.

Labour to start the selection process for next GE fairly soon. She's obviously not going to stepdown from her seat and the party will choose someone to run against her in 2023.

It's a very safe seat for Labour and she didn't seem too popular when Corbyn parachuted her into the seat (lowest majority since 1987) but could she split the vote?

No sympathy for someone who uses his wife’s suicide to get out of what would’ve been a pathetic punishment. That’s before considering the lobbying.

Yeah, I’m sorry that the guy lost his wife in such tragic circumstances, and I’m sorry for their children and for the rest of their family. Depression and suicide are a horrible, horrible curse, always incredibly cruel on all parties touched.

But I’m also sorry that *he* made his wife’s death a political football. Paterson, inexplicably, was the one who brought her into the discussion, then sought to chastise others for questioning why he’d done so.

He’s also been completely unrepentant about his professional indiscretions, which unquestionably broke the rules on conduct as they stand, and repeatedly, and his resignation statement given all that has happened was an absolute disgrace.

Personal sympathy, certainly. Professional sympathy, absolutely none; and the guy should be nowhere near political office at any level ever again.

There will be a recall petition should the high court reject he appeal or the appeal fail, so this story isn't over
