Haha, I didn't think it would be long before a new Politics thread appeared. Same old names but everybodys going to be nicer to each other.

Lately I've heard lots of moaning about cronyism regarding the government which seems odd to me. Its like my dear old mother always says its not what you know its who you know.

For example a friend of mine is a plumber and has done work for me at mates rates many times over the last few years. He saved me a fortune when I needed a new boiler.

Cronyism at its finest.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not cronyism though is it.
That's a professional doing a job that he's trained to do and choosing to do it for a reduced rate because you're a mate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Crony means close friend or companion so cronyism is exactly that. Mates helping each other out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your mate is a plumber, would you get him to fit your kids dental braces, because he's your mate?
'Mates rates' is the complete opposite of what is happening with your and my tax pounds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No but I would if he was a dentist.

I watched QT this morning and it was based around Scottish issues.

Now I've always thought that the SNP would win an indyref2 with ease but I have to say the two pro Indy panelists got hosed and with the Salmond v Sturgeon show down coming up maybe things aren't that certain after all?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In our scenario though, he's not a dentist he's a plumber, like they're not medical test suppliers they're hotel carpet contractors...and Tory donors.

As for Scottish IndyRef II, I agree, it doesn't look like the shoe-in it maybe did...if...You believe the reporting. I'm interested to see how it plays out in the months ahead should the SNP get their expected Holyrood Majority.

The Indy ref is never going to be a landslide, if Sturgeon does get it over the line she's going to contend with an awful lot of remainers, best of luck with that.

Boris dealt with it and Sturgeon is a more capable politician imo.

When did I tell you that? And what is your implication?

The implication is that it took Boris four years to get it over the line after a decisive result, Sturgeon won't put up with that, that's if she's still in the job of course.

Incorrect, it took him just over 12 months to get it over the line.
I've no idea what Sturgeons plan is. If there is a referendum and if the nationalists win, unlike Johnson, I don't believe she will break the law to stymie democracy.

Nor do I but if the SNP scoop in the Holyrood election its a solid mandate for them to go down whatever legal route they can. It will be amusing to watch the UK sovereignty brigade perform their gymnastics to deny Scottish sovereignty.

Not 100% about the legalities but could the courts compel the UK government to grant a indyref?

That would be an Ivan question. I don't know.

holding a second referendum after some seven or, in actual fact perhaps more likely, eight years, seems quite reasonable in a democratic society. This would be two full electoral cycles for most states. In addition, Scotland can point to the fundamental change in circumstances brought about by Brexit.

And say this poll is accurate, how terrible is the education system in this country that’s enabled folk to want to bring something back that existed before any of them were born? I mean, are we really that dim?
