I'll be forever appreciative of the CITB and YTS scheme, yes sone employers exploited it, used it for cheap labour but most didn't and the training I got has stood me in great stead for the rest of my days. I would like to think there are young adults out there who would accept the equivalent of £27.50 - £35 pw for the. Firat 2 years in exchange for an apprenticeship but I have my doubts.

I dunno Hector, I’ve had a number of apprentices. Just like anyone other member of staff, some are excellent and genuinely want to learn, and some aren’t.

My start was the YOP when I was a teenager at £16 a week. Around6 half of what my mates were earning doing things like bread deliveries, working in a butcher shop and one on the railways

No idea what that equates to today but likewise I can’t see any youngster going for it at that level.

We start our apprentices at between £28-32k plus training costs and due to the nature of most of the jobs, a vehicle.

That is excellent Ginger. Tier 1 contractors are paying graduates with 1st class degrees less than that at times.

Luigi Magione's lawyer has filed a motion for unlawfully obtained evidence. Apparently the police didn't read him his rights when they first detained him and they took his backpack out of sight to unpack and repack it. They then didn't claim to find the evidence in the backpack until at the station.

If this motion passes, all the evidence the police found will be inadmissible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am still struggling to believe that we’ll ever see Luigi testify publicly in an open court.

Nah Pawl only talks about Starmer
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's the leader of this country and therefore should be comfortably the most debated person on here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So why have you talked about him a lot less since he became PM
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because everytime I've had a look at this article in recent months it's been Trump and Gaza which although important shouldn't grab all the attention.

Yesterday was a great example. The heating bills of GB folk went up again and it didn't cause a ripple on what is supposed to be a politics thread!!?

Although Starmer didn't do it because he wanted to fair play to him for cutting the foreign aid budget. This country is facing a cost of living crisis and we should put our own house in order before trying to solve the world's problems.

It’s the cost of trying to capture loyalty to be honest. If they do what we need, then we need to pay them properly. After their 3 years they are gradually moved up to circa £45k per annum which is a fair whack for someone aged around 24 on average and it’s only by then they start to provide a return and at least wash their faces so to speak.

After that it’s up to them what they can earn but the cost of going into the market and poaching someone decent is ridiculous now and they often come with some form of baggage.

Hey ho. It’s been working for a decent number of years now so all good so far.

I’m glad. It’s weird because everyone knows ‘Pay peanuts….’ and yet I deal with dozens of employers who don’t heed it.

It would be interesting to see what their staff turnover was like. Ours understandably is the lowest in our industry and way below the average.

We need our people to develop relationships with customers and that can’t be achieved through short termism. And that’s before you even try to calculate the disruption when someone leaves.

We never lose people to competitors and it’s more likely they go out on their own or join one of our approved installers which isn’t often thankfully. Most times they become great customers in turn.

That's decent.

I checked, my £27.50 would be just under £100 today, not really comparible.
I did get 40+ weeks of block release training and a free toolbag full of brand tools, Inc a Yankee screwdriver (look it up kids ).

Work*

When I started work in 1998 I was on £35 per week. They put it up to £45 when they realised I had to pay my bus fare each way from that.

But they gave me a great learning and opened doors that I may not have had available to me otherwise.

Damn what a memory, loved that supermarket as a kid

Was Gateway, then Sommerfield and now Co-Op.

The irony being, you wouldn't be able to buy anything in there for less than £1.97 nowadays.

My first job was in a factory heat treating drill bits. £5.80 an hour over the summer. No tax as I was a student. Felt really rich at the time.

How much would it cost to offshore 50,000 people per year? How many billions per year would be sent on that? You're literally better off giving them a job and making them pay taxes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We don’t have 50,000 unskilled jobs a year available
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are approx 1.5m cleaners in this country alone. Most jobs are unskilled.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think he means there aren’t 50,000 unskilled vacancies in the country.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are far more. Cleaners tend to be older demographic and they retire/quit motsly not replaced. Its not a vocation that is attractive to the indengious population. There are always vacanacies in unskilled sectors. Social care for example is teetering because of a lack of workers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Geniusnuts never comes across facts that disagree with his preferred narrative because he lives in a bubble.

He's solution for everything is giving rich people everything they want so they can give everyone else a job. Genius.

I’m in training to be a driving instructor and it’s set me back about £3k and counting so far
----

in love an instructor like you, Arab, be sticking your head out the window and screaming 'Tory nonce' at anyone cutting into your student's lane.
