CL format

All the European competitions should be straight knockouts with no seeding.

The big clubs wouldnt let UEFA do that though, would they?

Regardless of quality, a knockout tournament from day 1 would be brilliant. No seeding, you're in the pot and it's drawn like the FA Cup.

How great would that be?

Shame it would never happen. $$$$$$$$$

It would make it unmisable even the draws would be more watchable

posted on 7/12/17

If you're going down that route you might as well make qualifying tie in with the name, ie, Champions only

But as has been said TV money and advertising dictate that would never happen

Yeah agree Busby two legged knockout ties is the most eciting type of football you can have IMO, away golas and all, makes it very exciting and a tie can swing so much on a single goal.

This is what I'm saying though, have the Champions League as "Champions only" but bring in a European Super League for all the higher quality teams. Again though, the issue with that is they will overlap for some teams.

posted on 7/12/17

For the sake of credibility alone they should just change the name to something like "Euro Super League" and leave it at that

A straight knockout would put the weaker teams straight out. Most likely resulting in less money for them. Which would only increase the divide in wealth between the elite clubs and the rest
So no

Yes. With no seeding at all.

Would be much better, and much more random.

The sooner to European super clubs head off to form their own superleague and suck each other off into oblivion the better

Nah, you'd have too many crap teams from small nations.

I don't see an issue with the top leagues having 4 teams, since they're all good enough to win it in a knockout format.

The already do this. It's called the CL and its rigged for them.

What with 4 teams from the big countries still? So chelsea could draw barcelona after winning the league and liverpool could get some dross like celtic? Wouldn't be exactly fair would it.

If you were to do a knockout competition then it should just be the champions of each country, hence champions league.

I'd be happy with that scenario

I blame the money clubs like PSG etc ruining it for proper clubs like Chelsea, City, United etc who do things the proper way and don’t throw money at it to try and win it.

And although it is a good thing, the English domination of the last few years is getting boring. It’s almost too easy for the likes of City, Arsenal or even Spurs to win the CL these days. I’d rather us English sides had a bit of competition as it’s just becoming too easy to win.

It does now though. How many so called "weaker" teams get any further than the Last 16? Next to none really. The gap will always increase every year because they will never be able to touch any of the top teams financially whatsoever, some things are just inevitable and you can't do it.

Straight knockout though, they could draw 2 similar teams in a 32 team knockout and be in the QF. That's the chance they'd need to take.

Maybe they should think of a seperate league for the English teams? maybe put in a few other teams from England because they have the best teams in the world? Maybe a big tv company would be interested and make some sort of "premier" league?

An English team hasn't won it since 2012. Would hardly say it's been a "domination" of the English teams since the early 2000's through until sort of 2010 really barring Chelsea in 2012.

Spain has been the dominant figure since 2010 onwards really if anybody.

The game would need a fundamental re-balancing for the Champions of most nations to be anywhere close to good enough.

Essentially revert to the 70s, little foreign imports and sensible wages.

The CL is pretty good how it is now though, the 2 group stages trial was an awful mess but as it is is the best way if a group stage has to happen.

Group stages are good to mix it up, Out of our group roma were probably third favourites, but atletico didn't even get through.

Chelsea a few years back didn't qualify with 10 points which has been enough in every other group every other year I think.
Man utd didn't qualify out the group once too I believe.

Mixes it up. Not as easy as some people make out
