in this article it was revealed we tried talking to Perez in the US over Varane, but they categorically refused to sell him.

IMO Jose (and all United managers) have a budget that the likes of Pep don’t seem to have
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Money spent in this summer transfer window,

Jose £74 mill
Pep £64 mill
----------------------------------------------------------------------
United spent £67.5m this summer.

Speculation surrounding a move for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld rumbled on for much of the summer.

It turned out to be unfounded. United never made a bid for the 29-year-old Belgian.

As one club source said: "We ended up in a situation where if we had done a deal, we would have been swapping our fifth best central defender for another fifth best central defender."

this has to be bullshiiiit, Toby would've been the best CB at the club instantly.

It does seem like Woodward overrates our central defence

Does he really think only Varane would have improved us? Toby would have been perfect for the younger CBs

I do think the next guy has a huge job on his hands though.

Not half.
Moyes barely scratched the squad.

LvG bought some average players who have moved on, some good squad players, a couple of young stars and fielded our academy graduates.

Jose has failed to bring any grads through, alienated our young, paid for talents and took in several older players on big wages.

Also those figures don't tell the whole story because City spent fortunes last season and another £55m in January on Laporte. They also have a much stronger squad, many of which pre date Pep anyway.

Mina looked a reasonable gamble. Instantly above Smalling in the pecking order and Lindelof for me (he hasn't impressed).

If the club are going to play it this way with the transfer window, which I can understand, then they should have just got rid of Mourinho months ago.

Do they not realise how volatile he is when situations like this happen? The last thing we needed going into the season is this dark cloud hanging over the club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I reckon it's possible that the board said "If you want Sanchez in Jan you'll have one less in the summer" or something. If not then they're not backing him I guess.

I wouldn’t mind Zidane but he’s a huge risk as he would be taking over a club without Ronaldo, Ramos and Modric.

Not convinced by him tbh. Won the CL with a squad he didn't assemble. Couldn't motivate them to pursue the league as well.

Why exactly do people think Zidane would join us? Especially after the incredible legacy he’s just left at Real.

Robbing, in terms of attackers I’m sure that’s the case. But we were quite clearly in for a cb.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely big not not as bad as some would say.

Poch n Zidane would love to work with many of our players and they'd get money to spend obviously. That's the frustrating thing, we have the talent there now. Jose hasn't been able to get it all out of the players.

I'd say there's at least 15-20% to come from most of our top players, if not more.

If true he should've been sacked as soon as last season ended.

Back him or sack him. This halfway game the board seem to have been playing this summer sets us back in both the short and long term.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not necessarily, with no viable candidates out there to replace him it is logical to accept a likely lack of short term success until options open up. Stick some duct tape and plasters on the squad and hope Jose can coax top 4 out of what is already an expensively assembled and paid squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Poch is the man you should have gone for rather than the poisonous one.

He will end up at Utd or Madrid imo. If Madrid's new manager doesn't start well then they could beat you to it. I think it's in your long term interest for Mourinho to crack quickly.

The line from the club on that is his agent was asking for stupid money.

posted on 9/8/18

Yeah Zidane’s job was pretty straight forward with that quality of squad. The idea he’s even contemplate coming here to work with this one, let alone get it firing, is ridiculous.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Or more likely because he's available and taken a year off and he's the kind of guy who would appeal to current players and future players. Definitely an aura about him.

I think he'd be high up on our list. Don't you?

The next manager won't have as big a job on his hands as Van Gaal and Jose did when they first joined.

You could use that argument for most managers ffs.

Plus we have lots of very good players anyway and he could get rid of the not so good ones.

Anyone we go for next is going to be a gamble. I reckon Zidane will be one we look closely at.

I imagine Pogba n Martial would love it too. That would be a welcome bonus as they are two of our younger and most talented players.

posted on 9/8/18

Or more likely he’ll go and work with the board at Juve. More credible sources reporting that than him coming to manage us.

The question as to why needs to be asked when he has already bought a £60m pair, another two were at the world cup and he lets TFM (A full dutch international) and Axel (Eng U21 international) go off on loan.
That he didn't believe in himself to turn any of these into quality PL CBs tells you all about Jose.
