I think this finally settles the debate of how weak the league is this year, its so weak people are getting ill.

Footballers are being paid for the next 3/4 months of inactivity so I’d like to think they’d have to qualms about playing on past contracts - as if in a post Coronavirus world they’d kick off
----------------------------------------------------------------------
that doesn't address the issue with the transfer window if England decided to keep this up till September
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There wouldn’t be a transfer window until after the season

So if the season started up again in say, September, the transfer window due this summer would be October/November time

and how do you handle players out of contract and the transfer window?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Up to them. They either sign a 1-2 month extension with their current club or they join another club, get paid but dont play for a month or two.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
right, but as of July 1 players can be bought and sold, there's also the matter of European comp qualifiers to work around.

if England decided to keep playing till September, how do you handle the transfer window, do you stop it until the season has finished which might be after the European one has closed essentially stopping any transfers overseas?

fair enough some players could sign a short term extension or know they're leaving for their new clubs and fancy a summer holiday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At least the OP realises that there are ways this can happen

It's not as if it's just England affected though is it? The whole continent is affected and may end up doing the same thing.

This article is great , we have all worked out through an exchange of views that actually it’s very feasible that the league season is completed , well done OP

Seems to be if your team has a chance of winning something you're willing to disregard a global health crisis.

This is the modern way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

correct, but who says the other leagues are going to try pick back up or not just write it off and start again ins September with a new season?

if they do that and we're the only ones trying to finish ours then we're at loggerheads with their timing

posted on 13/3/20

UEFA will have to work with the leagues to find the right solution.

There will deffo be allowances made though

Try and picture the world in say, 4/5 months

Hundreds of thousands of people dead, the economy is tanked and a massive feeling of tragedy in the air - it’s not gonna suddenly start being every man for himself and football players demanding to be sold so they can go play in Spain or Germany.

It does show how much luck Liverpool have been getting this season that it's needed something miraculous and unprecedented to counterbalance the luck.

because someone mentioned other leagues.

If we get to say, September and the league in England is starting up but say, La Liga starts up in August, I don’t think footballers in England are going to be ruthless and demand to be allowed to leave the PL

(Just because some of their contracts might be up in June )

There’s some contradiction here tho Robb

On the one hand you’re saying the players won’t be mercenary and not demand moves in the light of this crisis

But the only reason we are even contemplating this is because the PL would be showing it cares more about money if it tried to do this.

So why would the players then be expected to act any different than the sport they are playing?

This seasons games will be completed , there are 5 months to do it allowing for the next season to start in September.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I very much doubt any football will be played anytime soon. This thing is only going to get worse for a while

By April when this break is supposed to be over we’re probably gonna be like Italy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s why the euros are cancelled to allow time to finish the domestic leagues
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Still won’t happen. This thing will peak in June - by that point it will take a while to get back to normal. August/September at the earliest and even then the players will have to have a pre season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Might as well just start the next season.

Apparently Blackpool were many points clear at top of division one when the league was cancelled for the second world war. We should play out the end of that season first.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The UK declared war in early September 1939. I was curious as to how Blaclpool could be "many points clear" at that stage of a season so I looked it up. They were 1 point clear after 3 games had been played.

Good research.

Because the point is if this spills over past the traditional end of the season and the starts impacting next season just so we can finish this season

Then their priorities are clear especially if the other European leagues just can theirs and start again next season.

So I’m confused why we’d expect players to not be exactly the same and focus on themselves

So...they wait 30 years for a title, finally get it together and play an outstanding season (albeit with rivals off form) and just when they are going to celebrate, the season is voided.

Even I feel sorry for them, that’s incredibly harsh, it’s like god hates scousers...

I don’t see why any other leagues would start again though?

They all have the same issues. Promotion and relegation, CL places up for grabs. Title races very close.

I don’t think a decision to complete the season in the summer (if it’s safe to do so) is a money orientated decision. It could very well be that the PL chooses to start again and other league complete theirs,

If I had to guess I’d say that all the leagues will come together and agree a unilateral agreement as to what happens next

posted on 13/3/20

They do but if you look at serie A and La Liga the money involved especially from promotion relegation etc is nothing in comparison.

Italy is in full blown lock down so lord knows when they could even restart if they wanted to, Spain headed same way.

posted on 13/3/20

One slightly funny thing would be if the league was declared null and void and managers who were sacked for poor performance sued because that performance never existed ha
