Royale Family, right Sizz?

Yes.

Maybe that’s why I like it.

In the 90s who'd have though that in 2020 Liam would be the heroic figure and Noel the kant!

My problem with Oasis is that I find them a bit generic and pedestrian and I don’t think Noel is a particularly good lyricist.

I don't mind Oasis. I have a few of their early albums but mostly now they suit a boozy singalong IMO rather than a dedicated listen at home. Their songs will always stick with me though as they were around the same time I was first able to go out drinking etc in the mid 90s so the nostalgia factor will always be there.

Noel writes some turgid, crayon blunting lyrics, but I don't think that's my biggest problem with them - Barney from New Order has written some basic stuff in his time too, but musically the band more than makes up, and covers for it.

And that's the problem. Too often with Oasis, the two things go hand in hand.

Having said that, they do have some good songs. But not enough for me to consider them a good band.

It used to really bug me how popular they were / are. Now I kinda get it, without really getting it. All personal taste, isn't it.

Generic is fair, and Noel's lyrics are very much... of a type. But pedestrian... post-2000, maybe, but not their best songs of the 90s.

Being 17 and hearing Wonderwall come on in (south) Manchester bars was amazing.

Never the most progressive of bands, like the one they most strongly imitated, and barely stepped foot in other genres. Blur were a better example of that. But they sure could write a decent singalong song back in the day.

I don’t hate them, and they have some decent songs, but I just think they’re a good band not a great one.

Oasis just captured an era, even defined it. The look, the sound, the attitude. It wasn't really about being progressive or stretching musical possibilities. It was just about enjoying the ride.

Yeah they and a few others were fresh, coming out from the grunge, Take That era.
Like the Beatles, they were of their time..

As expected their post-2000 stuff doesn't seem to be so popular.

If you're including tracks with their vox on them, doesn't that then open up the entire Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds back cat?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Has he got any that would stand up to Oasis hits? I’ve seen him live a couple of times and the Oasis songs he does are usually better
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No idea. Not a fan of either band tbh.

Find Noel an interesting character though. Often makes an entertaining interviewee.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Think he’s a bit of a stale fart now tbh.

Yeah, have to agree with that, Clockwork.

Looking back I think the 90s was quite unremarkable when it comes to mainstream bands pushing musical boundaries.

In comparison the 80s (which at the time I was so looking forward to the 90s replacing) was remarkable for its experimentation.

The second golden age of pop music.

I think Blur did more to capture the era.

Park life was specifically made to be the antidote to grunge.

That's still a good album, it's just that it followed on from 2 seminal albums. If they had brought it now it would be seen as a modern classic I think.

Similarly Live Forever was written specifically against the i hate myself and I want to die crowd

I was gagging for that album
I still enjoyed it at the time but looking back now
Think even Noel described as an album that should be listened to once and thrown away

There are some good songs on Be Here Now but it's a bit "rock by numbers". You love it all on a first/second listen but then realise it's not got much more to offer.

Funnily enough, D'You Know What I Mean?, the opener and lead single, is probably the exception, as it's a bit of a slow-burner. I also liked the title track and It's Getting Better (Man!!).

I Hope I Think I Know is a terrific song. Also liked Magic Pie

It was the amount of good BSides that amazed me about them.
Most cd singles had the song plus a bloody frankie knuckles remix, a radio edit and a dance version or something
When I heard master plan for the first time as a b side

I remember the hype around that album. Nothing has come close since in musical terms to the fuss that made at the time and I don't suppose it ever will. I was late to the party getting that album when I heard how many were disappointed by it.
