The current situation isn’t fair on anybody.

The Premier League would also need up to 40,000 tests for players and staff if plans to play the 92 outstanding games behind closed doors are pursued."
==========
40000 tests to make sure a game is played while our key workers are struggling to get tested?

At least we’ll see some games?

apparently the vast majority of the league oppose these plans outside of the top 6 according to the press.

OP I'm not disputing this but I can't find anyyhingbin the press to back this up. Might you have a link?

It does make sense for a club like Brighton to be against this. The only way they can be relegated is if the season is finished and they get caught.

The issue of testing is perhaps misunderstood. The PL are using a completely different system from the NHS and are using machines the NHS would not want to use and in fact cannot use effectively.

It works both ways, no team had 100% home games left.
It will be a close split, it’s just another excuse for people like u to moan

Why is this a PL issue only? What about the championship? Surely that has to be concluded to render the PL valid as far as relegation/promotion is concerned. How many neutral venues are we talking about there? How many tests? How many peoples lives have to be put in harms way just to conclude this season?

Just bin it off. Award an honorary league title to the dippers so the victims can stop crying. Keep everyone safe, then start all over again when it’s safe to do so.

Absolutely ridiculous that this is even being discussed at any level. There was over 6000 new cases yesterday, and that number is only going to go up with the more tests that are available. If football, or any sport for that matter, starts up again, people will gather. People will get ill. People will die.

The point about Brighton is precisely what sprung to mind when I read this proposal.

Home crowds are a great leveller.

But compromise will need to be made if we want to finish the season, and I’d rather see it finished than not.

There is no completely fair way of doing anything, unless no more football is played until fans can pack the stadiums again. Which is simply not going to happen. So the next fairest thing is to complete the season behind closed doors so that teams still have their achievements in their own hands. If it is deemed too risky to use all stadiums across the county then so be it. It is fairer than calling the season as it is now. Home advantage has already been pretty much taken away by having no fans in the stadium, so it is already going to feel very weird for the players anyway.

3 employees (does not specify players) have tested positive since resuming training.

If 1 premier league player tests positive then they will go back to square one.

We are starting to hear the players voices about this issue now - Aguero being the most recent, and they are worried. Add in the ridiculousness of neutral venues - there is a huge difference of Aston Villa playing Watford at home compared to a neutral venue - and the inevitable is creeping closer.

None of the clubs want to talk out of line currently but that’s because no real decisions are being made at the moment. When push comes to shove, I expect the popular decision and the least litigious will be null and void.

Obviously this splits opinion, so let’s just leave it at wait and see.

I agree with your post but one thing that shouldn't split opinion is this.

Even a quick google search will show that all the experts agree that null and void will be the most litigious and problematic option. So much so that no one is even considering it. Clubs and chairmen are publicly threatening law suits if the season is null and voided.

I would stick my neck out and categorically state that null and void will never happen.

Don't be daft. As the great man said.....

"Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that"

It would be no different if the 3 members of staff had another illness. Do we cancel games when a player is suffering with the flu? Or has the sh*ts?
Tottenham lost half of their match squad due to a dodgy lasagne and missed out on Top4 because of it.

With adequate testing and cleaning methods in place there is no reason why it cannot go ahead. It’s what every other business in the U.K. has to do as we ease our way out of lockdown.

OP

Not in a million years are the majority of clubs going to vote to play in a neutral venue. Why would they want to throw away home advantage?

No different to the workers/school kids who will be packing the tubes and other public transport when lockdown is eased.

I also don`t get the idea that the season could be finished of in three weeks by playing at neutral venues. What about the FA Cup, CL and the Europa Leagues. Or don`t they count now as part of the season.

Either all competitions have to finish properly, or none finish.

Home advantage is already pretty much gone due to lack of fans.

I would bet that it will be allowed to happen, and that there will be a second peak and a second lockdown, in London, at least.

No one is obliged to go to their workplace if they feel their safety is at risk, including NHS staff or carers.

Professional footballers have no need to put their lives on the line, they don't need the money and they aren't key workers.

Any player, coach, match offical etc who doesn't want to participate either through caution or because of moral reasons should be free to do so without being penalised.
