What defines a football legend?

I'll have a go at categorizing them

Legend: a player loved by fans. Usually because they were one of the best, or in one of the best teams at least. But not necessarily.
Great/goat is reserved for only the most talented. Usually backed up by stats but not necessarily.
Flawed genius: a great but not quite, usually because of things outside their control but don't hurt anyone else. Like booze. But not necessarily.

I think you can be a great while being a sh!tty person but you're not going to be loved by many regular fans. You're not a proper legend if every time you're mentioned it's followed by 'shame about..'

If you can get away with cheating you become a legendary cheater

700 goals will never be forgotten. Yeah he's all ego, but he's not sniffing coke or snapping legs is he

Maradona is certainly a legend in Argentina and to some I suppose just a Footballing great!
I don't believe a cheating incident like the one Rivaldo did in the 2002 World Cup should distract the opinion that he was a truly great player. Actually imo a tad underratted.

I think terms like legend are personal to each individual tbh.
David Rocastle is a legend to me as he was breaking through at Arsenal when I was a kid just starting watching football, was an excellent, exciting player who scored some wonder goals, and he won titles and cups with the team. Of course his death at an early age adds a poignant sense of remembering him too.

Some Arsenal fans consider Fabregas a legend, as when they were growing up Cesc was breaking through, and he was our best player. But I wouldn't say he was an Arsenal legend.

Kind of fits BLBs definition.

I mean what's a little rape between sniffing coke or snapping legs.

I'm not saying he's not one of the goats of his generation, he definitely is

Is there any delineation between happy drunks like Best and wife beating drunks like Gazza? I mean its just an illness only the symptoms are slightly different...

Ronnie Radford was a legend at Hereford...

One FA Cup goal on a muddy Saturday - that's all it took

By definition a legend can be somebody who is famous or notorious, so remembered for good OR bad deeds. Maradona is a double-legend as he fits the bill in both cases.

posted on 8/12/22

the fact maradona could play as well as he did after abusing his body for years and being on the charlie during matches is a testimony to his incredible footballing ability and in fact even adds to his legendary status

what defines a legend?

Simple ..... has he scored against Celtic.

Whatever you want really. The term is entirely subjective.

Maradona, yes the man cheated with the hand of God, but my word you cannot detract from his achievements. Almost single handedly (Canniggia was decent) dragged Argentina to 2 World Cup finals, winning one.

Dragged Napoli to Serie A when they were not a top club.

The thing about Maradona and drugs is, they were never performance enhancing, if anything they were the opposite. A guy like that with that talent is never going to come from the middle classes, he was dirt poor and virtually uneducated - you have to take into account his circumstances growing up for how he turned out and be a bit more open minded.

Greatest player ever, by far

Even Best snapped a blokes ankle in his day - does that detract from his genius?

Maradonna was the greatest (at least in that era anyway) but he did cheat, he did use PED's. So it is tainted

Okay, didn’t know that, I thought he was just on the bugle.

Doesn’t change it for me, those drugs don’t give you the skill he had

They will give you more stamina, make you more alert, higher pain tolerance, but they can’t make you pick the ball up on the halfway line facing the wrong way, spin, leave 5 defenders trailing you, round the keeper and slot home.

The guy was a genius

Your example is massively flawed. How could PED's help in a situation where you need to run half the length of the field? no idea.

they can 100% help with your technical ability.

Niave and ignorance to suggest otherwise. (heads up i have a decent bit of background knowledge in PEDS)

ps the guy was a genius..... but a cheating genius none the less

posted on 8/12/22

this notion of PEDS dont help skill is incorrect.

How does one improve their technique and skill. Practice , practice , practice the single handily most important thing is practice.

If someone can practice harder, longer, more often then their technical ability will improve more.

On the pitch the first thing that goes when you tire is your technique, its gets sloppy. If a player can last longer before that technique starts to decline then its also helping the technical ability.

My argument is this, take Maradona, Scott Brown and Rabiot. Give them all PED’s, only one of them is scoring the goal Maradona did in 86 against England, because drugs can’t give you that level of skill and balance.

Heads up - I also know what I’m talking about
