What PED’s we’re Scotland on back in the day and why did they stop taking them circa July 1998?

Jeez....
Always difficult comparing players across different generations but this feels very typical of the modern day fan, who seems somewhat obsessed by 'numbers' or stats.
The fact is Diego Maradona, and players of his generation, were assaulted on a weekly basis on the football park. Go back and watch the England game in 86. The tackles he endured would have had the game abandoned before half time if it was to take place now.
The likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been wonderful players and are quite rightly talked about in the same breath as the other true greats of the game. But we can't pretend they haven't been massively helped by the developments in the laws on tackling alongside various improvements in sports science.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't forget the development of falling to the ground every contact and squealing like a girl and holding some random part of your body. We can't go back but sometimes I wish we could.

I'd say both Pele and Maradona are over rated, not by their peak ability, but by the fact they didn't achieve half of what many others have.
Ronaldo and Messi have put up superior numbers over much longer periods of time but Maradona was just so unique and unplayable at times. Public like a bad boy who makes it and plays with some swagger.
Bang on the gear, and later on PEDs, so difficult to say how much of his talent he wasted. Fact he spent years at Barca and then Napoli off his nut is comical though 😂 game was so corrupt then it's mental.
Genius 100% but like George best, people judge them on their peak moments rather than what they did, or didn't, achieve over their careers. Unpopular opinion, I'd say Best and Maradona both wasted their talent. Even Pele I'd say the same as he didn't leave Brazil til late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Numbers shmumbers - Maradona dragged a relatively poor Argentina side to 2 World Cup finals and won 1. Messi is great but the Argentine people do not love him like they love Diego.
Napoli absolutely adore him also, dragged them to two titles and a UEFA cup when all they had won previous to him was a couple of Italian cups.
Do not know why R9 is not getting a look in - World Cup winner in 94, runner up 98, winner 02. Copa America runner up 95, Copa America winner in 97 and 99. Also won: Dutch cup, Spanish cup, Cup winners cup, UEFA cup, Brazilian cup x 2, La Liga x2, world club championship - what a player
----------------------------------------------------------------------
R9 was mentioned in the OP
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know, but no one shouting his name below the line. Growing up he was the player we all wanted to be in the playground, brilliant baller
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no need for discussion.
Pele was, is and always will be the best.
For those of us who remember the 1970 World Cup, there was no-one who played the game with such skill, exuberance, and wonderful sportsmanship. Who will ever forget Pele and Bobby Moore hugging each other after the England v Brazil group match?

Tbf vardy winning the league with Leicester is far more impressive than Maradona winning the league with napoli, but he isn't a legend. Maradona, like best, wasted his career.
Neymar has scored 70+ goals for Brazil in 120 internationals. Pele did it in less than 100. On horrible pitches against horrible players with a medicine ball. You head one of those things, you will be seeing stars for a week.

Comparing players across decades of time is pointless (more on that later).
The only meaningful comparison is to compare players of the same era - Messi v C Ronaldo, Maradona v Rossi, Pele v Charlton, etc (just examples, not to be taken as my opinion of the two best of each era).
Here comes the later part:
The riches available today and the dedication requiered to attain them, were unthinkable in Pele's time. Why should he have left Brazil in his peak? Arguably, his first real opportunity to make big bucks in those days, was his opportunity to joing the NY Cosmos in late 1970s/early 1980s, which he did.

Thanks for sharing that link.
Just look at how Pele bends that free kick!
In those days it was common knowledge that only the Brazilians could take free kicks like that.
Today, with the modern boots and balls, the kids do it on the playground.
A perfect example of why comparing across long periods of time is simply futile.
Cristiano Ronaldo is vastly overrated
