It's admirable, which is why Labour MPs are rebelling
I think the danger is that, like some of their other policies, the focus seems to be on bringing in/saving money and the application is ill-considered and having widespread damaging impact on those who can ill afford it.
Take NI, The massive corps can suck up NI changes, restructure, lay some people off, relocate to India or whatever, for small businesses these cost could push them over the edge with no ability to suck it up.
Winter fuel. The average take home of a pensioner is £50 a week above state pension. This implies masses of pensioners not particularly better off than just state pension - £14.5k a year. The wealthy pensioner this is targeted at is not the masses. The masses are at the other end of the scale
Farmers. Yes there are some very wealthy land owners who have deliberately targeted agricultural land to avoid IHT but that is not the majority. The family farmer is now hit extremely hard by this in an industry that is struggling on many levels. And the impact will go well beyond farms, it hits rural communities and the rural economy.
What faith do we have that these quickly cobbled together benefit cuts are going to land where they need to and be fair?
