Now we know that’s unfair and we’re looking it through the lens of rational people. But the only audience Trump and Vance were playing to was the America First crowd

That lot are braindead and shouldn’t be allowed to vote. These are incredibly stupid people for the most part ( there are exceptions, corrupt types) and have proved to be a danger to the world by being incredibly easy to manipulate.

I am waiting to hear what President Mertz in Germany has to say, as much as I respect Olaf Scholz,I believe that a more positive and strong Mertz will be better for the whole of Europe, and the sooner a united Europe disassociates ourselves from the self serving greed and selfishness of this American government, the better.

They really need to shuffle those coalition negotiations on at a pace.

And this humiliation trap by Trump and Vance was designed to put the pressure on to Zelensky to sign the deal as whatever people think of how Trump and Vance went about it - they came out looking strong. Absolute caaants but strong and hold all the cards as Zelensky is risking his countries future by walking away from a deal.

You’re very mistaken if you think I’m being pro Trump here. I’m just being a realist. Zelensky and Ukraine sadly need US help. And he was set up to look bad in the eyes of the only people Trump cares about which is the America first crowd.
If Zelensky wants to help his country he’s going to have to swallow his pride (and yes it’s very unfair as Trump and Vance are absolute caaaants) and accept a deal.

Accept a deal that gives up 20 per cent of his country? I don't think so. If you think Trump has won hands down, then I am sure he can persuade Putin to hand back all the land stolen from Ukraine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately Russian keeping most of the occupied lands will be the only outcome. They’ll trade some of it back but they already have everything they need. There is great wealth within the land they already hold and it’s enough to use their tried and tested method of putting their own people into those territories to get a good bit of influence of future voting. They won’t take these territories as part of the Russian Federation, they’ll state that the people don’t want to be Ukrainian, they’ll want to be independent and they’ll run an election where they’ll obviously win the vote as they’ve placed their own people there. Nobody but Russia and these newly founded independent territory will recognise it but that won’t matter as Russia will have what it wants from it.
A base to go in should it need to in future and wealth being funnelled out of it and into Russia, as well as influence over voting.

Putin will undoubtedly want Donbas and Crimea formally subsumed into Russia; he's spoken about it openly for a long, long time, and will see it as part of his legacy. As soon as they possibly can after reaching a ceasefire, there'll be a vote similar to the one they held in Crimea in 2014.
And yes, he will want more territory. Putin didn't go into Crimea or Donbas for natural resources.
The land grab of 2014 was an area of Russian speakers with a mainly pro Putin bias from what I can make out.
Ukraine must know they're gone forever but the reas occupied by Russia in this current conflict are a different matter and the people think they're worth fighting for.

No, he went in as they had been placing Russians in it for years so they could claim they’re liberating the people. They’ve done this multiple times in Ukraine and in Georgia. They then use these territories as a base for future attacks as they did in Georgia and Ukraine more recently.
In Georgia they took the territories that were close to the Black Sea, with beautiful land and scenery and it became part of the Russian Federation, when they installed Russian’s into the land, mostly rewards for people with influence for siding with the government to use as holiday homes. They didn’t do any such thing with the occupied territories in Georgian, instead using them for influence and a base to attack from which they did in 2008.

In any negotiation, Putin is going to demand that Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson (at least as much as they have under control) remain under Russian control. There will quickly be some form of referendum (or referenda) as there was in Crimea, and he'll declare the Oblasts to be part of the Russian Federation.
With Ukraine, I think he might then consider he's gone as far as he can for now, and will be very content once the borders have been (again) redrawn to work how he can, non-militarily, to prevent Ukrainian accession to the EU.
But expansionism is a central part of his ideology, and he won't be done with Ukraine. Those people who know far more about Putin's geostrategic interests than I do make very compelling arguments for Northern Kazakhstan being next.

Trump already said that this was "good television". He was acting as he did in The Apprentice but forgot that in his current role, there needed to be decorum and diplomacy.
Zelensky gave a better account of his message and his wish for lasting peace on Fox News, without being berated nor interrupted.

Genuinely curious who thinks that, apart from the Trump fanboys?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Indeed, Trump and Vance came out of it looking like utter t0ssers … bullying, ill-informed, untrustworthy, self-serving t0ssers.
The entire planet can also see it was a set up, certainly from Vance, who gave the game away early with his out of nowhere dig about Zelenskyy campaigning for Biden. Also part of the stitch up was MGT’s boyfriend plant (poor cant), asking why Zelenskyy wasn’t wearing a suit FFS. Clearly not asking Elon that though.
Also telling that TASS were in the Oval Office, but the Associated Press weren’t … Aye, about this freedom of speech that JD seems so keen on?
It was great to see Zelensky standing his ground and not sucking up to Trump as Starmer and Macron did!
Yet again it shows what Labour and Starmer are all about, considering Starmer and Mandlesons past comments about Trump plus the alleged Labour volunteers interfering in the US election and now we’ve got this cringeworthy show of affection from Starmer! 🤮

Starmer was more diplomatic, I'll hold judgement on him until after tomorrow's European summit meeting at Downing Street.
Ukraine is in a war against Russia.
The time for diplomacy is past
The time for NATO to let Ukraine join is now.
The time for Europe to stand up to a bully is now.
And while we ar at it, kick Elon Musks business out of Europe.

The fundamental question now isn't about the US. We know at this point that America is at best an unreliable ally, but more probably an adversary to European security. So the question is now really about European leaders. Will they commit to decisive and unified action to quickly assert and build up a European security structure that will enable Ukraine to defend itself and demonstrates a credible opposition to broader Russian threats?
Do European leaders have the clarity to understand what is happening or will they indulge in wishful thinking about the possibility of retaining some US foundations in the continents security? And do leaders believe they have the political capital to act, when the socio-economic forces driving MAGA and Putinism are active in Europe, driving authoritarian nationalism which directly attacks the cooperative spirit we need?

Indeed. The optimistic part of me likes to think that yesterday’s monumental clusterfook might actually finally be a big enough red line crossed that the UK, Europe and other non-US NATO allies wake up to the urgent need to look after our own security. Timescales are obviously the issue though in the short term. Trump/Vance might also see that as a win, but bigger picture I think their clown show yesterday might prove to be a massive own goal down the line.

Russian, I really hope European leaders start to act, and put actions to their words.
Build a European military (albeit difficult)
Ramp up weapons, ammo and systems production
Form a trade bloc with Canada and China
Ramp up boycots against Russian gov, people and assets.
Send as much military and financial aid to Ukraine
Start negotiations with Putin
Start replacing American bases in Europe with European forces
Walk on our own feet and let go of the hand of America
https://tinyurl.com/fwcc9mp6

Good list.
I notice America are on a par with Zambia and Senegal so far.

As I’ve mentioned above, RR, we desperately need the CDU/CSU and the SDP to put their big boy and girl pants on and get at least a working coalition in place, ASAP.
Europe is going to need Germany, France and the UK very quickly singing very loudly from the same hymn sheet.

Wearing a cargo sweater and pants is an appropriate look for the president of a country at war. He has been wearing this for the past 3 years and visited every other country leader in this attire.
Zelensky’s choice of wearing a cargo sweater and military-style pants is deeply symbolic—it’s meant to show solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers and reinforce the image of a leader in wartime. He’s been wearing this look since the 2022 invasion, even when meeting world leaders, to send a message: Ukraine is at war, and I stand with my people on the front lines.
Trump is known for using personal attacks and ridicule in political debates to undermine opponents. Mocking Zelensky’s attire could serve a few purposes:
Undermining His Image – By calling out Zelensky’s consistent look, Trump might be suggesting that it’s an act rather than a necessity, trying to paint him as theatrical rather than a serious leader.
Appealing to His Base – Many of Trump’s supporters are sceptical of U.S. aid to Ukraine. Mocking Zelensky helps frame him as undeserving or unserious, reinforcing the argument that the U.S. shouldn’t be funding him.
Contrasting Leadership Styles – Trump values power displays—suits, wealth, dominance. Zelensky’s humble military attire represents a different leadership style, and Trump mocking it plays into his preference for “strongman” aesthetics.
Ultimately, it’s not about the clothes—it’s about the message behind them. Trump mocking Zelensky is part of a larger political strategy, not just fashion commentary.
Although it would be absolutely powning Trump if he wore a suit to the meeting in London this weekend, Zelensky will remain respectful because he needs help to save his country. Putting the welfare of his country before his ego, if he even has an ego.
Zelensky is everything Trump isnt, as a leader of a country and as a human being.
Trump keeps doing this, he must love sadism

Now we know that’s unfair and we’re looking it through the lens of rational people. But the only audience Trump and Vance were playing to was the America First crowd
—

You couldn't be more pro Trump if you tried.

It was great to see Zelensky standing his ground and not sucking up to Trump as Starmer and Macron did!
Yet again it shows what Labour and Starmer are all about, considering Starmer and Mandlesons past comments about Trump plus the alleged Labour volunteers interfering in the US election and now we’ve got this cringeworthy show of affection from Starmer! 🤮

Starmer was more diplomatic, I'll hold judgement on him until after tomorrow's European summit meeting at Downing Street.

Agree entirely, can't wait to see what Starmer comes up with ! please surprise us Keir.
I wonder what Zelensky will be wearing !
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be hilarious if he turned up in an Armani suit.
