I don't know how anyone can be so certain about potential transfers. We can all be proved wrong about players we watch a lot, who after a season at our club turn out to be much better or much worse than we thought. With Cunha to United we're talking about a player none of us have watched in lots and lots of matches. Add to that the fact that we can't predict how he will respond to United: is he the perfect profile fit for Amorim's requirements or not? Is he inspired by the big stage or crushed by it?
I can understand having doubts and raising questions. My biggest question is around the fact that £62m seems like a very big proportion of a seriously limited transfer kitty. But ultimately, I think we should acknowledge our limited ability to judge these things.
By the way - "A smart data led club like Brighton or Liverpool would no doubt." It's a very good point that we need to be making smarter moves in the transfer market but some thoughts about this. 1) INEOS have stated that they came into the club and found we're basically in the stone ages when it comes to the data department. That's something they can't just sign a cheque to rectify: you need to build the team and then build the data. So hopefully we're beginning to use the data at our disposal better, but we're not in the situation of having cutting edge proprietary software like Brighton. 2) Liverpool have been a great example of maximising ROI thanks to smart use of data but they've also spent very big sums on certain players. Usually it has been well spent (Virgil, Alisson) but there are one or two expensive missteps too. Anyway, I think part of the challenge is that as everyone ups their game in data there's less likelihood in being the only club to identify a huge talent, so it gets more and more unlikely you can recruit an elite player for a bargain price. The potential elite players are going to be identified as such by the rest of the market, and the competition for their signature will reflect that. Ultimately, I think this benefits bigger clubs. It reduces the guesswork around player profiling and means there's less investment risk. And the bigger budgets will more consistently translate into getting the better players. The competitive edge the likes of Brighton and Brentford have found will be eroded.

1) I get we don’t have the data analysis department that other clubs do, but we are hardly in the Stone Age I imagine. They can identify lesser known and less established targets for cheaper fees, that is their professional full time jobs after all. I could recommend Cunha for his release clause ffs. Hell I would even recommend for similar fees we could get Mbeumo, Eze or Mitoma, who in my opinion are all superior players.
2) Yeah, Liverpool have spent big on targets when needed. I’m not adverse to that, as it would take us up a notch (see Bruno). However Cunha is not in the bracket of VVD and Alison. He’s probably two brackets below that, yet we are going to spend top bracket money on him. As I said this is a poor use of our limited resources, and I just think we can do better.
I’m not saying he will flop, I just know what I see, and he’s not a £62.5 million player is all.
Keano, you seem to be arguing both that we should be guided by data and that Cunha doesn't pass the eye test.

Cunha, if he joins could well flop. Plenty have done.
However, he is Prem proven and currently plays for a team comfortable playing the same system as Amorim likes. He's also a pretty much ready made fit for that left No10 position.
One thing is for certain he won't be a square peg in a round hole if he joins. He also seems to have a confidence that means he thinks he belongs on the big Old Trafford stage. What a challenge for a player. To be part of a team that takes United back to the top.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even if he’s not, we need players that can help us just get back into the CL. We aren’t exactly at the front of the queue for the level of players we need to get back to the top.
We can’t do better because better will not want to join Man Utd when there are other much better teams. So many deluded fans. We are a bottom of the table side who can’t offer major wages like before. We are not doubting top bracket players.
If he signs, I might have a few nagging worries about the price, about whether we'll get anyone else in attack, about his disciplinary record and about whether he'll flop like so many of our transfers; but I won't be worried about his ability. I think he's a fantastic player. Seems to carry the ball effortlessly, links well with others and scores goals he has no right to score.
The whole price argument gets boring after a while. For ages on here when we were linked with Declan Rice he was ‘too expensive’ and now he’s very much worth the £100 million.
If Cunha is the right player and we can afford him no one will remember the price after a few games.
We need so many players but musts include an experienced striker and keeper. We can’t be signing another potential like Delap. We need a striker that has been scoring for multiple seasons.

Price is relevant when we're skint and handcuffed by PSR!
Victor osimhen and Cunha and our attack looks transformed! But very unlikely. Instant goals with Amad and Bruno to support. I’d sell Garnacho and Mainoo if required for PSR.
We’ve got one of the worst attacks in the league, we need players that can score and create in the prem and he’s one such player. He’ll probably end up flopping Idi Amorin gets his hands on him, but I don’t mind this signing.

If we buy Cunha then we can afford him and PSR/skint is irrelevant in that context. And by that i mean we’re not going in blind with this signing as the number men at the club will have done their sums and he’ll be affordable.
If spending £60 million on this guy was going to screw up our budget then I very much doubt the money men would okay it. Otherwise they’d be spending £30 million on someone else who was shiiiit compared to Cunha
It won’t be because of Ruben if he flops. It will be the same reason every signing bar Bruno has flopped, because the club is a toxic mess and a shambles. Ruben won’t be here in 2026 and we will still be dreadful in 2026 and 2027. We are done.

You have to remember that for PSR purposes, a players fee is amortised so £60m only reads as a £12m cost, per season. If you off load Rashford & his wages from your books then give Cunha £200k you are instantly saving half that £12m annual cost on teh wage saving, so the net impact on your finances is about £6m per season. Get £30-40m for Rashford, replace him with Cunha and in PSR terms you are comfortably better off.
I also think him being a bit of sc-mbag and being very physical is something that could benefit us. The squad is mentally very weak and I think someone like him can give us that kick up the ar-e and get us playing with a bit more oomph. We're a wet blanket at the moment.

If only PSR was our only problem…
If we don’t win the EL, it looks like cashflow is going to become a very real issue unless we can bring some serious dough in from sales and shift some high earners. On that front, it has been reported that Wolves might be willing to accept payment in a series of instalments, which would be useful.
The wage bill needs to come down further, so we also can’t be moving on Rashford, Sancho and Antony and replacing them with three signings on £200k p/w each. We’re gonna need to play hardball on wages, and be ready to walk away and chase other targets if agents start taking the pess thinking Ed is still in charge of the purse strings.
Another option might be operating with an even smaller squad next season. But that isn’t necessarily going to be conducive to a serious tilt at regaining European football.
Honestly, I find myself changing my mind on Cunha on a daily basis. It could be an inspired signing, or one where we go, the signs where there, it was never going to work. Such are the fine margins in football.
I don't think the fee is unreasonable. We have been stung by overpaying for players recently, so there is naturally a bit of apprehension when we are splashing out a decent whack of cash. Of course fees are always inflated, but in today's market, I would say 55-65 million as a fee for Cunha is about right - a player with some proven EPL ability, and just whether he can step up another level.
There are players like him, Mateta, Eze etc etc who whilst not all the same style, are forwards who would be in the same fee bracket, so just a case of getting that bit of luck and picking the right one/s.
Moving on players this summer is going to be vital but I feel like it's going to be a very frustrating period. Clubs will drag out any potential deals to get the best deal with us and leave us with little options come the end of the window where I hope we don't panic buy.
I can see us struggling to sell Antony, Rashford and Sancho this summer and end up loaning them again. Casemiro would also be good to move on but again his wages are a huge stumbling block plus he's playing more regularly now (more out of necessity than anything else). Lindelof, Heaton, Evans and Eriksen will be all moved on which will at least free up a chunch of wages. I reckon we'll be open to offer for Garnacho this summer too as his sale would potentially give us quite a bit of money to spend on any replacement that's better suited.
It's quite depressing that we are desperate to get CL football next season, not to try and do well but simply because of the money it'll bring in.

Moving on players such as Rashford, Sancho and Casemiro should take priority over everything at first I feel. They are an absolute anchor for us moving forwards in any meaningful way.
As you said though, no one will want them, and as a consequence a decent player like Garna, who is on relatively low wages in comparison, will be sacrificed. Another short term fix for a longer term poor decision.
It’s all backwards at our club at present.

With Cunha to United we're talking about a player none of us have watched in lots and lots of matches.
Price is relevant when we're skint and handcuffed by PSR!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we buy Cunha then we can afford him and PSR/skint is irrelevant in that context.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have to remember that for PSR purposes, a players fee is amortised so £60m only reads as a £12m cost, per season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If only PSR was our only problem…
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you have the right man at the helm to ensure every penny is squeezed.
