Lex. Would you pay £50m for Ben White, right back today?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes!

Easily one of the best RBs in the league for the last two seasons.

Don't get me wrong, ben white is food but I still don't understand how he could command that amount of money back then, I really don't want us to be dealing with Brighton again

It was typical English price tag. Van Dijk & Slabhead had both gone for a lot higher. In 2021, what we paid for Ben White was the market rate.

As we all know, when you sign a younger player for big money, most of what you're paying for is their potential. So, to my mind, there is no 'shouldn't have commanded that fee back then'.

We took a chance (as almost all transfers are for players of any age) and it's worked out brilliantly so far.

White now seems a bargain to me.

It's worked out well, but I just don't get how Brighton always command these big fees for their players, no one heard of ben white when we were in for him.

Best way to tell if they've been worth the price tag is if the media keep talking about it. They don't.

£50m for a CB is fine. But for a right back? I think Tomiyasu is actually better defensively, and how much did he cost? £20m? A £50m full back is top International level and lets be honest Ben White is short of that!

White was bought as a CB though

The way we use Ben white is fairly unique though, I don't think any international team would use him like that.

Tucks inside to either play as a CB or a DM, and can overlap to help Saka too. And if there are injuries, he can play as a pure CB to a high standard.

50m was just pure English/Brighton tax. Maybe overpaid, but I'm happy seeing him in the starting line up.

Plus, he's a fecking warrior. Plays through the pain even though he's injured. Basically played against Newcastle away on one leg (the year we missed out on top 4), and played through injury before the Dubai break.

Tomiyasu I don't care if he was 20m, the guy is never fit. White has been far better value as far as I'm concerned.

Agree with Tu Meke there, we've got better value (far better) from White than we have from Tomi. Ability is only one factor.

Funny how the Tomisexuals are always the first to laugh about KT being injured 🤔
