Personally I do not believe it should be taught in schools.

I was born in 1974 and went to school in the 1980's were religion was rammed down our throats. However back then we were all Catholic (Not demeaning any other religion just pointing out a fact).

Nowadays there are a multitude of religions represented in our schools so personally due to this I don't think its a viable option any more to teach it in our schools.

To take another point from the OP I am not an overtly religious man myself but I have no issues with people of faith. If someone can go into a church etc and say a few prayers and feel better about themselves then for me that is a good thing.

However I have no time for those that try to force or impose their beliefs on someone else.

I have no problem with comparative religious studies.

Obviously religion is a very important part of our society, and to avoid people growing up ignorant of others, I can't see the harm in telling them about it.

If your child is being given an education in a single religion, and that religion is taking up a significant time in their timetable - maybe you've picked the wrong school. For what it's worth, I went to a C of E primary school with reasonably heavy bent on the church during assembly and once a week the rector would come down and bore us - and I am a happy atheist.

I fecking hated r.e in school, was always getting into trouble for questioning the crap they were telling us, what annoyed me the most was that the Jehovah witness didnt have the take the class yet everybody else did.

If i had a child i would not want them to be in the class, they should wait til they are older to start it, though most religion is forced upon children at home not at school

Religion should not be taught in schools.

That is what Churches (or their equivalent) are for.

Should be an opt in class I think, available if you want it.

Not force fed.

Nope. That’s about tolerance, religion leads to intolerance.

No I don't. I'm not forcing my non belief on him. If he grows up to be very religious it won't make me love him or like him any less. Everyone deserves to make up their own minds for me.

However it doesn't belong in the school system imo.

So where then? Sounds like you trust them to make the "right" decisions. I really see no harm in it, a reasonable grounding in the various religions available, like anything else available to people in life, can only be a good thing for me.

I think you're right to just support your kids and trust them to make their own choices.

Need the Europeans to perform well this weekend with the big one next week. What's the mood like over there? Are they confident? I know I would be looking at their team.

Nah, ignorance leads to intolerance.

It's a study of religions, not indoctrination. It's teaching you an awareness of other faiths and that's increasingly vital with our communities becoming more diverse.

And I think it's absolutely necessary, and then hopefully I wouldn't get so many people staring and asking me dumb questions just because I wear a turban.

I was taught religion in a way that rammed Catholicism down my throat and I'm ultimately against religion, however I do think it should be taught in some capacity as it's a huge part of our society.

It shouldn't be taught in huge depth, but there should be some sort of overview that educates on each set of beliefts (including things like atheism) and then those that want to learn more should have to opt in to learn more.

To completely ignore all religion and the impact it has on our society would be pretty petty and short-sighted IMO.

Like the OP I don't care what other people believe in and it's our differences that make people interesting. Sometimes I envy those with faith, but just too many things to ignore that come with.

I was the same and agreed it does actually turn you against it.
