Never watched any Greenaway, but I've always heard it can be a bit hard to get your head around some of his stuff. Where would you recommend starting?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i've rewatched 3 recently - draughtsman's contract, a zed and two noughts, and drowning by numbers - and the latter was reasonably user-friendly, and the funniest. if you find lots of people dying funny (though cabin in the woods did end with the world being destroyed...oh yeah, horror comedy, evil dead ii of course).

the one i haven't watched for years - since the red triangle days on channel 4 - is the cook, the thief etc, which i don't remember being that amusing, but did have ravishing cinematography (and i'm not just talking about helen mirren).

Cheers Don. I'll see where I can find some.

I love dark comedy, but tend to shy away from the more gory stuff.

I have an irrational hatred of Ghostbusters. Never seen it, but the theme song was totally inescapable and it completely did my nut.

I find there's something strange about this comment.

Yeah, there’s some interesting stuff for IOAG’s shrink to dig into there…

The scene where they all beat the shiiiiit out of a sheep to hip hop music just isn’t the same.

In the Loop I though was very funny, but I hadn't seen The Think of It so I suppose it was fresher for me than for UK audiences.

yes, i hate to be that guy, but the tv series was much better (absolutely brilliant in fact)...see also man about the house, the likely lads, the honeymooners, rising damp etc etc.

of course in terms of taking a superb tv show and turning it into a poor movie, nothing can beat steve martin as sgt bilko

It was clearly a 'giving it a bash' joke about being excited about a film...

east is east is very good, and refreshingly unpreachy (disappointing sequel though)
recently rewatched rita, sue and bob too, which was very good
obviously gregory's girl deserves a mention
and am i the only one who finds peter greenaway films pretty funny (eg drowning by numbers?)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Loved Rita, Sue..... But didn't find it laugh out loud.

the two main characters were just like my best mate and me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
dare we ask which of the two losers was you, and which your mate?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm the depressive, he's the womaniser.

I think I'm in a minority who really liked True Grit too.

Burn After Reading isn't great, but worth it for Clooney and Pitt's parodies of their usual roles.

O Brother! I would need to rewatch one day. Back when it was on general release, I hadn't yet read The Odyssey, so I imagine many of the references might have been lost on me.

Baz, re The Big Lebowski ... for shame! I don't know how many times I've watched it, and I still enjoy it every single time.

Can't say the same for Life of Brian. There's the classic sketches of course, but I struggle to watch the whole thing without my attention levels dropping off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Warriors was based on the Odyssey. Great movie too. But not funny

the warriors was based on the anabasis...and between cyrus, the "desperate dudes", and some of the other gangs (ooh, they're on rollerskates, scary), i found it pretty funny...but yeah, terrific movie

He was proud not to disappoint the two girls. Unlike the Pub Landlord who says he's puffed out after the first

Love both the thick of it and in the loop ….Malcolm is an utterly brilliant character

If you like those then give Veep ago if haven’t already

Basically the US version with the White House ….I avoided it for a long time as not a big fan of US sitcoms anymore but it is very very funny

It's not a comedy but Battlefield Earth is hilarious because of how bad it is. Truly awful stuff.

The Death of Stalin

Great shout! I can't think of another film that manages to be so funny and so terrifying in equal measure. Basically The Thick of It with an element of genuine jeopardy.

You're right, I just Googled it. But it ressembles the Odyssey which I read at school, so have forgotten a lot. But I know Odysseus and army have to fight their way home, si it's similar.
