Could it be that you are trying to emulate Chelsea and build two squads, one for the CL and one for the Prem, or is Franke just after a very large pool to pick from.
Forest are going to try and do the same, with the equivalent of the European Johnstone’s paint trophy to play for, losing our two most influential players, and not being able to attract top quality will really hurt us, if we don’t get Mcatee and/or Elliot I can see us being in a relegation battle.
Not saying we will necessarily be relegated but we certainly won’t be able to build on last season.
The rumour mill says MGW had a call from Nuno two days ago telling he was going to be club captain and a new contract was on the horizon, it seems he Immediately phoned his agent to engineer a move.
I also agree MGW and Maddison will be tricky to fit in the same starting XI.

Good signing for Spurs, Gibbs-White is grate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't realise this was even controversial
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hezzman and Billy think he's terrible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lol, never said he was terrible, now you're putting words into my mouth.

Just not astounded by this signing like others.

Grealish will likely end up at Everton or Newcastle now, unless he rocks up in Serie A. He would do well there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Totally underwhelmed" is a pretty clear statement that you do not rate MGW whatsoever

f we pay him £200k a week will that make you happy!?

I think that any team that wishes to challenge for anything needs that depth so they can just keep their levels up. This league seems to be getting faster and more physical. A lot of teams using younger players who deliver more energy. Subs seem to be used as much to maintain the energy on teh pitch as they do to change tactics. Like rugby, the replacements are finishers who more often than not just bring fresh legs and energy.

There is certainly a movement to counter the tippy-tappy that has dominated the last decade and we are seeing more physical and direct football mixed with possession. Its physically more demanding and its hard to maintain through a season. Forest did that to a degree last season and what cost you towards the end was probably a lack of depth and the tank ran empty, especially as you also had a decent cup run.

I dont see us building 2 teams, just having depth. I see no issue with having Maddison and MGW, they will probably job share very effectively in a season when we will have 50 games minimum.

Across the front line there are lots of different options, which will allow for tactical change.

I think this just gives Frank the flexibility he needs to maintain levels and adapt where necessary

MGW is a decent signing. Consistently good for Forest. Kudus more of punt imo.

Am I the only one who doesn't really rate this signing?

Seems a sideways move to me with regards to his talent.

Is he any better than what we have??

I'm certain because his wages are cheaper than Eze that's why we went for him over Eze!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m with you mate. Totally underwhelmed. Feels like another BJ / Solanke type signing, massively overpaying for someone who’s not at the right level if we have any real ambition. It’s funny because we all hate Levy for being so stingy but then he goes and spends so much money on average players. Also not quite sure where MGW fits into the team, surely we need to find a buyer for some of our deadwood?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What? MGW is a steal at 60m. He's a brilliant player. He's creative, works really hard out of possession AND scores and makes goals. He's worth more than what we're paying. Even if you thought we were well covered in those areas, he improves us by a considerable distance. No Spurs fan should take issue with this signing at all.

City wanted him but deemed the price in January too expensive (they were asking £70m) and they wanted a deal done pre-CWC according to #FabRom

So he seems to be very well appreciated by those in the know....not sure what says about serial miseries Hezzman & Hackney

The last bit about Nuno calling him, isn’t Gibbs-White already Forest captain? And wouldn’t a new contract offer give him leverage to ask for higher salary at Spurs, given that he is obviously interested in coming?

DEAL OFF

comment by reddave (U8660)

posted 4 days, 16 hours ago

Ryan Yates is club captain, MGW was vice-captain.
As the ‘DEAL OFF’ above says, Forest are trying to stall the deal, it will go through as everyone now knows his release clause.
Just legal semantics, and Forest falling foul of their own ineptitude, again.

posted 4 days, 16 hours ago

Expect it to go through - just will take longer while Forest moan at the premier league. He has a release clause which has been triggered and there is nothing the PL will be able to do about that

comment by reddave (U8660)

posted 4 days, 16 hours ago

Apparently the release clause became active on 1st July, but was confidential.
Spurs were not given permission to speak to MGW, as is against the rules.
Agree it sounds a bit ‘pathetic’ on Forest part, they knew about the clause, but didn’t sort anything out with MGW.
Totally agree the deal will go through, it will just make the legal eagles a bit richer, like they need it.

Thing is, there used to be the whole thing about “tapping up” players, but now I thought it has been accepted that clubs always approach players first, see if they are interested/agree personal terms and only then do they put the bids in.

That’s how it goes according to all the journalists anyway as they always report “personal terms agreed” first

Agreed, I thought Madueke had already agreed terms with Arsenal for a move from Chelsea, and as far as I know there has still been no contact between the clubs, but everyone seems fairly relaxed about it.

think it might be more to do with the fact that the whole world knew about a release clause which was supposed to be a secret.

We knew, we saw it was affordable, we bid and NF have the hump. But they will have a problem proving anything untoward

posted 4 days, 13 hours ago

This happening with the first chairman being a loonatkc is no surprise. Seeing his antics with Nuno towards the end of last season was embarrassing as his actions are not surprising.

How would a club know about a release clause if a club denied permission to speak to the player/agent. It would make the whole point of them irrelevant.

I don't believe I've seen many of these tapping up cases go through before, just frustrating as pre-season is close, we want him in asap.

posted 4 days, 13 hours ago

Yeh, what is the point of a release clause if it is to be kept a secret.

This is just foot stamping from the Forest owner because he knows a prize asset is leaving for less than he wants and they facked up with the release clause.

Yes exactly this, delay and frustrated. Won't help us with any future transactions with them that for sure.

Then refusing to speak to us is also mad. I'm guessing it's essentially blocked as we'd need forest to still sign the registration over. God knows what's happens if they refuse!

If they had no legal grounds to refuse then MGW would sue them Spurs would sue them and they'd be liable for a hell of a lot of damages....that would be a very bitter turn from them because if they alienate the player then they end up with a player who will probably refuse to play for them.

End game is that he will go to Spurs but they will make it as difficult as possible and may look for an settlement with us, for us to make the whole -unlawful approach' thing go away. Levy wont treat with them unless we are banged to rights and i doubt we'd be so silly as to allow that to happen. If there's one thing about Levy, that is not his style he will not play fast and loose with the rules, and if he does he will not get caught.

posted 4 days, 12 hours ago

If they've got grounds to sue anyone it's the agent. We might not have acted in the best way but AFAIK there's nothing in the rules that stops us asking the agent about their player

posted 4 days, 10 hours ago

It’s not against any rules for a players agent to inform an interested club of a minimum fee release clause in their contract.

Fact is the chairman is a bloon. He came on to the pitch to grief up Nuno after a game. If anything it’s him breaking the rules of the players contract. Don’t want players to leave on minimum fee clauses don’t put them in their contract. That simple really

Depends what the contract says tbf

posted 4 days, 5 hours ago

Rumours are that Foreat set the release clause at £59,999,999.99 and Levy has been caught out because he was not prepared to pay a penny more.

Seriously though, why set a secret release clause at such a nice round number of £60m and then have the audacity to assume confidentiality has been breached and have any expectation that you can prove it.

posted 3 days, 19 hours ago

It`s entirely possible Spurs bid £60m as a fair price and to our valuation of the player, and by sheer coincidence that amount happens to be the release clause figure.

Forest would have no way of proving that did not happen. And in any case, the only people breaking any confidentiality agreement, would be the people who know what is in the contract, ie. MGW, his agent or some Forest executive staff member.

It`s a salty chairman trying to kick up a stink for no good reason, other than being pist off with the deal imo.
