I have genuine concerns about where this cancel culture is going after the above comment. I don't feel like the political class of today are listening to me. There must be an alternative. I just want to be able to express free speech.

you can't have legitimate concerns about going to a nationalist rally, but you can have legitimate reasons for wanting to make comedy sketches about children being shot. apparently. if you're intelligent anyway.

You aren't motivated to do good comedy though, right? Your aim is to bring society together and make people less likely to be swayed by political messaging which has racist overtones? You aim to do this by randomly name dropping Jimmy Saville and writing jokes about people on Robinson's march gassing people and shooting children?

Incidentally on Boyle:

complaints were received about comments he made regarding English Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington on Mock the Week, saying that... her boyfriend must be attracted to her due to an aspect of her sexual behaviour. The BBC ruled that the jokes were indeed "humiliating" (2008)

This caused many to complain about the state that the BBC had come to, with Conservative MP David Davies calling the joke a "disgracefully foul comment". Boyle was eventually cleared of any misconduct by the BBC Trust, although they called the comment "sexist and ageist". (2008)

The audience member explained that her five-year-old daughter had the condition and strongly criticised Boyle's portrayal of people with Down's syndrome. Mencap spokesman Ismail Kaji said that the comments could be misconstrued and seen as "no different to bullying". (2010)

This was condemned by the End Violence Against Women Coalition. (2012)

This was deemed so distasteful that his entire six-minute performance was cut out of the broadcast version of the 3.5-hour show. (2013)

Conservative MP Caroline Nokes strongly criticised Boyle's use of rape as a subject for jokes (2022)


I must say, I read SOME of the jokes which these controversies relate to, and part of me is wanting to laugh, although the part of me that recognises that they're distasteful is my dominant feeling.

Whilst admittedly I've not seen the proposed sketches, I can't find anything at all funny though about depicting people being gassed to death or children being shot dead. Boyle's made some objectively morally objectionable if not deplorable jokes, but none of the controversies he'd been involved in seem to relate to jokes as extreme as what you're describing. I appreciate that people vent their feelings in different ways, but tbh they just strikes me on the face of it as sick.

I also don't see that the 'comedian' has ownership of whether or not such matters are "at the expense of (the) victims", or at least whether they are offensive to victims or their relatives.

I can't imagine bereaved parents of children who were shot dead by the IDF, seeing the funny side of portraying someone who attends a protest march as a child killer. I also can't see British Muslims or British Jews for that matter seeing the funny side of comedy sketches depicting people being gassed by racists.

I also just find the whole attitude in the posts above destructive tbh. I don't personally see this as being the antidote to the current problems in UK society, irrespective of how intelligent the person writing the jokes is.

Such intelligence would be more beneficially deployed and be more likely to have positive effect, by being more constructive and showing people a degree of understanding and being prepared to listen.
People are there to be persuaded, if they feel included, but hateful ridicule is probably only going to distance them further.

God he's an appalling speaker.

Takes 10 minutes to explain something that should take about 1 minute to explain. Communicates with his arms instead of what he's saying. Difficult to understand what he's saying, and even if you understand the words it's mostly a load of bollox.
