I'd like my kids to know about Sunni's and Shiites and Burkas and that Allah is the name of 'god' for Muslims who practise Islam and that Ramadan is a big holiday and the Quaran is their 'bible' (and what a bible is) and that Mohammed (spelt lots of different ways) was their prophet and they beleive Jesus existed and was also a prophet but not the son of god/Allah (who is actually the same god of Abraham that the jewish people pray to and thereby the christians by default and the Muslims) and what Sharia law is and how it impacts their culture and if they're ever in a primarily Muslim country drinking alcohol could land them in jail because it's banned for religous reasons and that they really, really shouldn't make mohammed jokes in front of people who practise that religion - it's really, really bad form.
Your method? just ignore it, don't teach it, and pretend it doesn't exist. they can learn all that when they're adults.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Im not telling we should act like they dont exist. we should teach tolerance. we can teach that every person is equal and everyone has the right to believe in any religion without being subjected to any kind of discriminating what so ever. I dont think many riligions teach that
Back to the op, I have three children, two of which at primary school. Absolutely they should be taught religious studies. If they didn't, then I would change school immediately to be honest. I don't see any particular subject as more or less valid, particularly at that age where they soak information up like a sponge.
I'm not particularly sure how you can decently learn vast swathes of history or context within it if you never study religious studies as well, for example. Speaking from my experience, I know I couldn't have.
I do believe we can teach people to tolerate other religions and faiths without teaching every major religion. Teaching it may even enhance the recentments

Why would it?

because almost all religions teach their faith is superior to other religions

What are you on about? I dont have to know someones religion to be able to speak to them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was actually responding to this comment you made
"how do you deal with people when you don't understand them?"
I've actually been quite suprised how snobbish athiest attitude has been towards religion on this thread. They have really represented themselves well here

"because almost all religions teach their faith is superior to other religions"
shouldn't kids be taught that?
I have religion phobia..it's all bollx. A human construct to explain away things that we don't understand and are scared of ie. Why we are here, the universe, death etc. It's one big accident !!
"how do you deal with people when you don't understand them
I didnt say that, I was replying to someone else about knowing a language and my reply wss the religion of the person doesnt matter, I can still talk to them.
You have religion phobia if this is the way you think mate
---------------------------------------
Jeez. Yet another 'phobia' because someone doesn't like/agree with a certain stance
Ilori - Skrtel To Zenit.
My bad..
Apologies then
Screen,
You seem to be mistaking religious studies with a indoctrination of just one. That's completely different.
That's completely irrelevant.
If the education system is secular than teaching children about religion is not going to lead them to become resentful of different religions as they'll be taught from a secular view point, not a religious one.

==============================
No, not realy..
If someone doesn't want religion being taught at schools because he thinks teaching religion in schools would be a means of recruitment then I have no choice but to call it phobia..
You see, even I used to be afraid of God.
I thought to myself that if he existed then I
would be responsible, to be held accountable.
I would pretend to be interested in really knowing
what the truth is, but actually I was lying to myself.
How did I discover that? Because whenever
someone would come along with an argument, I
would deliberately ignore it ( Football bloodyhell).
Someone asked for reasons why people believe in
God, as if he really wanted to know.
But you see that he has no interest in the matter in that
he has ignored the response given to him on the matter.
Lets keep deluding ourselves.

You see the atheists claim they are the reasonable ones, but actually they are the ignorant ones.
Take a good look at Screen's response to my post above. Does that sound like a human being or an animal?
He has nothing to reason about yet he holds on to his ignorance with pride.
Educate us please, Mr Screen, on the second law of thermodynamics
---------------------------
So my post sounds like an animal eh? Did I insult you? your first point was bull and I asked you to explain the other points. grow up
The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases, because isolated systems spontaneously evolve toward thermodynamic equilibrium
I studied mechanical engineering you are the one trying to misinterpret the the second law of thermodynamics
If the education system is secular than teaching children about religion is not going to lead them to become resentful of different religions as they'll be taught from a secular view point, not a religious one.

It could equally be labelled a 'rattional concern' bud. But you chose 'phobia' for some reason
Now can you explain that to a lay person Screen?
Or did you just memorize it without understanding?
What is entropy?
Is it not a measure of disorderliness?
In other words the law is saying that: a system cannot
Spontaneously ( on its own) becomes less entropic
(Or more orderly) as it tends towards equilibrium:
Now is that description wrong, Mr Screen?
