We’ll likely see more and more opposition to the Non-Meat option from the gammon (no pun intended) crew who will no doubt call it ‘woke food’ and funded by companies with a vested interest in the meat industry there will be newspaper smears linking ‘woke food’ to cancer and lacking vitamins etc.
Hopefully the counter offensive fights back harder and wins the hearts and minds of the younger generation.

You can't threaten people or tax them into being more environmentally friendly. Frankly the generale morale of people in this country at least after 2 miserable years of covid, and now a war on our doorstep that threatens to spill over means that just shouting DOOM DOOM DOOM isn't going to be heard.
Governments should be creating incentived ways to become more green and environmentally friendly. Make people who drive electric cars or use green energy and reduce waste better off than those who don't.
Unfortunately our current crop of wonderful politicians believes more in punitive taxes rather than incentivisation.
The free market will be a huge player in climate change, and that's one of the reasons electric cars are now everywhere and readily available. It's good to be seen to be green now, and lots and lots of companies are doing just that.
People (including companies which are just groups of people) will never consistently do something out of the good of their own heart or because we've had doom shoved down our throats, but make it financially incentive for people to become more environmentally friendly and you'll actually get somewhere.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I like this approach a lot, for people and businesses.
Rather than threatening people with more taxes across the board or fines *if* they are caught polluting, why not restructure the tax system and find ways to reward people and businesses making the right decisions.
Broken record time, but small businesses are a great place to start. Statistically, they operate vastly more sustainably than multinationals, and, in my experience, are less likely to regulation-bend, to greenwash, or to take the approach of just facking the regulations completely and paying their way out of trouble when they’re caught.
Another option is personal carbon trading. The UK has been looking at the scheme for more than a decade and getting it in place wouldn’t require a huge amount of time.
Allow those who consume little to sell their credits to those who consume more, and tax the consumers on the transaction. Rewards considered choices and generates revenue that can be ploughed into renewables, for example.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You both make interesting points. One thing I'd add - from various discussions I've had with experts in the area of consumer behaviour around recycling - is that we know a large % of society tends to conform to what it perceives as behavioural norms. So you can absolutely have some influence on people via incentives and punitive levies, but people only act in their financial self-interest to some extent. On top of that, it's very useful to build a broad perception that 'this environmentally friendly way of living is what most people subscribe to'.
I think a similar dynamic created a turning point with respect to racism in football in the UK. It didn't go away entirely. I suspect that of the thousands of fans who were doing monkey chants in the 80s, there weren't that many who underwent a deep philosophical transformation. But it became socially unacceptable to overtly racially abuse people at a football match, and so all but a very small minority stopped doing it.

We’re all gonna have to give up on some luxuries as the climate crisis intensifies. The human race is resilient and I’m sure will find clever solutions to make up for this
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think people are naturally moving to more sustainable ways of life... Even some of my thickest, most stuck in their ways mates, are starting to do veggie meals and stuff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think a lot of that comes from health benefits rather than climate change a lot of the time though. Younger generations are much more health conscious with their diets these days. The environmental factor is just a bonus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sure, and it goes back to the point above about how you get people to change behaviour. Telling someone it is wrong to eat meat will land on deaf ears... But sell them on the concept that it is healthier and better for the environment and it starts to creep into their mindset.
Most people have an idea that something is a bit off with the way we live, but need a gentle nudge in the right direction. Promoting health is a way.
That said, the mates i speak of are not exactly health conscious. I generally think they are starting to wake up to the fact that their kids/grandkids world needs saving.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a great point, and an excellent example I think is the explosion in flexitarianism (self-attributed and, often, otherwise).
Want to know why the world is absolutely facked?
Tribalism.
The sort of behaviour that belongs in a football stand has spilled over into all walks of life. It's impossible for any conversation on a serious debate from covid, to Brexit to climate change between two people of differing opinions for the words gammon / snowflake / woke to be thrown out.
All this ever does is further entrenches people in their views.
Funnily enough, despite what my embarrassment of a generation believes you cannot shout or insult somebody into submission to get them to believe what you believe.
There's a reason why the "gammon" don't listen. They've got people with far less life experience insulting them and pretending that no matter what they say, this person knows better.
The way to harmonise things is to actually have open conversations with people, without forcing your viewpoint on them.
As structured questions to get people to think differently, stop telling people what to think, lead them to that conclusion on their own and accept that you aren't 100% right 100% of the time.
If people acted that way, we might actually get somewhere.
yes, I don't know why screeching into the void became so popular, but here we are.
I've not seen a single post on this thread where people are telling other people what to do.
There are plenty of people in the baby boomer generation that are open minded and can take on board the world changing at a rapid pace.
The reason "gammons" (or whatever you want to call them) can't or won't change is not because people are trying to force an opinion down their throat.. It is because they are generally ignorant, stupid people who have no interest in changing their way of life.
I self-identify as a woke gammon snowflake.

Was it too woke for you? Or did the truth hurt. Judging by your comments on this article I assume you’re part of the problem rather than the solution.

Perhaps if people like you who actually believe the right things had an ounce of humility and rather than mocked and insulted everybody tried to educate them in a calm, rational manner we might get somewhere.
All fackheads like you do is create a siege mentality amongst those who think differently.
