Before Christianity, humans were treated like trash especially if you are poor or disabled and it was accepted in those societies.
But Christ changed everything. He taught that all men were equal before God and should be treated as such. This was the philosophy that drove the abolisionists like Wilberforce to end the slave trade.
Also, if you were not a wealthy land owner, you could not vote but all that changed when Christians fought for us that all men are equal. This became the bedrock of western democracy.

Ancient Greeks did pretty well though didnt they.

Religion is a load of made up rubbish IMO, but if you want to believe it, that's your choice. Just don't use it as a weapon or as a reason to dislike another.

----------------------

If it was as simple as that, I would have no issue with religion at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish it was. People use religion, football clubs, skin colours and a number of other things as an excuse to start a war, a fight ect.

To me, being religious is no different to those who would die for their country or their friends, a feeling if belonging and being a part of something.

That probably is the biggest load of bollx I ever read on here!!!

Religion actually took the first step towards bringing equality and the powers (such as Rome) had to adopt it in order to keep control.

The weak minded need to be lead, faith in oneself, family and friends is all we require.

Too many fools have killed in the name of one god or another, they lack mental strength to take their own path.

Which religion? The stone people who believed God was the reason the Sun rose in the morning? The Ancient Greeks who believed in Zeus? Their Roman counterparts? Judaism? Christianity? Islam?

It was Christians that ended the Gladiators in Rome. Theodore Filner trained hundreds of peasants in Germany to care for the poor and needy as nurses. This was what inspired Florence Nightingale to establish nursing schools all over the world. Florence left a life of luxury to serve her God by providing service to her people.
If you are in employment today and you have additional pecks of office such as private healthcare, holidays, good pay etc, know that it all started with Christians like George Cadbury who decided to treat their workers as equal. Before then, man, wife and kids from age 5 have to work just to keep their heads above water.
Google Robert Raikes - he started teaching poor kids in England how to read and write mainly on Sundays - this was what came to be known as Sunday School. It led the king to enact a law which then made education compulsory for kids in England - And yes, Robert was motivated by his Faith in Christ.
GOOGLE THESE FACTS AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED AT HOW christianity changed us for good compared to what the press would have you believe today

How many times are people going to repeat this same point without facts?

I despise religion with it's divisiveness, hatred, control, doctrinism,self-righteousness etc etc
===============================================
And there you have it. The supreme irony.
"I despise religion with its divisiveness"...you couldn't make it up.

The switchboard at the Irony Police station is feckin jammed, after this thread.

I can’t believe the number of people who think that what distinguishes a civilised, tolerant society is one that bans stuff, and stops its children from learning about other cultures and beliefs, without grasping any concept of the irony implicit in such views.

wow! strong, strong brainwashing has happened here! don't know where to start. just know, that historically, almost none of the things you said are true.

Not only that, his time frame is totally wrong!!!

Christianity existed a good thousand years before William Wilberforce

A different argument could be made here.. Not necessarily. Do you know the mental strength it takes for someone kill or be killed in the name of something?

Utter rubbish, the thoughts of a person who lacks clarity if thought. One group telling you what's right and wrong is ok if he's lead by the so called son of god, whereas the head of the Romans is an evil bloke and whatever he says is merely barbarity? Hmmmmmm!

The Greeks had equality and democracy as did half the Arab world thousands of years before the Romans started stomping about Europe

Nowadays if we think something such as equality is right we will just do it because it's right, we don't need some false belief for that. This is why I think religion has now been outdated.

Hippo, what is it I said that is untrue?
You have google by your side. The truth is, without Christianity, England would not have had the industrial revolution - why? because it was christians who started the study of classical science in monastaries across Europe. These monastaries are what came to be known today as universities. So without science, there would have been no industrial revolution.

Brainwashing rules ok !
What about the persecution of the Jewish people for over a thousand years historically mainly by Christians !
What about the continual fighting over the centuries between Catholics and protestants. What about the kiddy fiddling by Catholic priests. What about the ridiculous homophobic laws, anti-abortion.... etc etc
