Overrated 'Legends'

Zlatan, he only scores in tin pot leagues, he'd never score in the Premier League

Generally think players are rated fairly, it's only a few people who make extremes regarding a players quality, usually to stand out and make some point that isn't probably true.

Regarding Suarez and Aguero, both great players but quite different, when both in the PL I would have described Suarez as having a more all round game where as Aguero was more of an out and out striker. But since Suarez moved to Barca he's role changed and es become more of a clinical striker whereas Agueros games has declined slightly. Either way, I've always preferred Suarez.

Rooney will go down as an England legend despite doing nothing of note at 6 tournaments.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
will he though?

he will go down as a united legend, despite the mediocrity of his last few seasons, because he has been instrumental in the club winning (a lot of ) stuff.

not sure anyone beyond the BBC really thinks he is an england legend.

Spurs no legends
Danny Blanchflower
Jimmy Greaves
Ozzy Ardiles
Paul Gascoigne
That's off the top of my head, and I'm a United fan

Henrik Larsson a legend for Celtic fans but bar a couple of seasons as a sub for excellent Barcelona and United sides he never done it in a big league.

Kris Boyd on the other hand, the real goal machine

Bale has to be a Spurs legend..........

Best player they have had in my lifetime.

I actually agree about Cantona and I've had this debate thousands of time so know I'm in the minority. Very good player obviously but I think his legend has been fuelled by his persona and attitude rather than his ability.

I agree re-Baggio as well (which according to Elvis makes me stupid...). An excellent player and at his best he could be sensational but there seemed to be a lot of games when he just didn't turn up. Not questioning his ability but 'legend' status? Yeah, not up there with the very best for me.

In a similar vein (and possibly more controversially) I never thought del Piero was consistently good enough for the reputation he had. Again, at his best he was amazing but consistently to be considered one of the worlds best? Not IMO.

Interestingly for forwards of one of the worlds great sides (Juve) both Baggio and del Piero only hit 20 goals in a season twice in their career (top flight).

Ballack is another that had a reputation I never quite understood.

If I could introduce a 'slightly overrated' category I'd include Raul, for almost the opposite reason as Baggio & del Piero in that he was really consistent but I'm not sure he was ever top draw. Not compared to the likes of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc.

Lee Trundle.
--------------

You can't judge him whilst he is still playing. Got a better strike rate than Messi and Ronaldo this season.

The fact Rooney is England's record goalscorer means he will definitely be classed as an England legend.

Let's be fair when it comes to legends, great players whatever u wanna call them then no club in England comes close to Manchester United

by whom though? the media j!zz over certain players, and sh!t over others, because it helps to sell papers.

what % of ja606 fans do you think would label rooney an england "legend"? or even what % of ja united fans?

The person who said Drogba is an idiot. If anything he is underrated by clown rival fans who just look at the number of goals and think he wasn't that great.

Baggio was playing in Serie A with notoriously tight defences. He was also an attacking midfielder/no.10 rather than a striker and at the time there was only 32 games in a season. He still scored at a rate of a goal every 2.2 games, but I wouldn't be judging his input solely on goals.

Some incredible stuff on this thread

I do think that players ability levels, and status in the game is elevated when they're a) injured, and b) retired.

Players such as Le Tiss and Ginola were very good players, but their highlights reel in more impressive than their week-in-week-out performances IMO.

Lol. Your drugs must be great OP.

For me, Steven Gerrard. Never bought what he was selling. A midfielder who couldn't play as a cog in the machine and limited his sides potential IMO.

posted on 21/2/17

Abit of both.

Of his 82 goals in England 12 came against the farmers of Norwich
---------
Go on YouTube and find a compilation of all his goals against Norwich, it's like a goal of the season highlight reel, a collection of excellent goals

He was an excellent player, but i always thought he could have done more for the England team by sacrificing his attacking and instead playing more defensively, this allowing Lampard to play his natural game. In the one game that he did actually play as a defensive midfielder and stick to it we hammered Germany 5-1 in their own back yard and Gerrard was imperious.
