Each to their own.

1 think I will say. There isn't a single player ever I would have swapped Cantona for considering what he delivered. Constant 1-0 (Cantona) wins, a title every season he was at the club except when he was banned. The man was gold dust, lightning in a bottle, pure consistent victory. Ronaldo de Lima, Maradona, Cruyff, Best, van Basten or whoever else wouldn't have bettered what Eric did during his United career.

IMO he's on anyone's level when you look at his results.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

At the risk of opening a whole new debate, Mr lightening in a bottle wasn't exactly gold-dust in Europe.

Domestically, during his Utd years he probably is on anyone's level when you look at results. Outside of England then I'm not so sure.

It's true. But Europe has always been a point of frustration for United.

In truth, and I'm sure Sir Alex would say so himself, given our domestic success over Fergie's reign we should have left Liverpool in the dust when it comes to European cup wins considering you only had 4 when he took over to our 1.

The next manager who writes himself into United folklore on the level of Sir Alex is the man who closes that 2 European cup gap. That could be Jose's perch to attain.

When we had him we were restricted by the foreigners rule in Europe, it makes a difference I think.

To be fair he got to 4 finals and won 2 of them, there probably should have been more but when we were at the height of his reign, we also had the best team in the world of any generation to beat. I'm not sure given the quality of opposition he has faced over that time that he can really still be beaten with this stick. A couple of times it was a case of what if? For instance had we beaten Porto that year, or Beckham hadn't gotten injured in that tackle we could possibly have won that game and given the opposition Porto faced on their way to the final we could easily have won it instead.

Maybe. Hopefully not though...

let's be honest, if the CL had kept the old qualification rules of the old european cup, united would comfortably be level with/ahead of pool.

they'd still be stuck on 4, and given the increasing dominance of a few leagues in europe - which under the old system would only have had 1 team in the tournament - i'd put money on 13 appearances in the tournament = 3 or 4 wins rather than "just" 2.

Cantona wasn't great in Europe, but then United were struggling during that period to get their head around European competition. We had just come off the back of the European ban thanks to LFC and were also hampered by the 3 foreigners rule.

Cantona had shown for France that he could do it on the international stage and I believe scored 20 in 40 appearances for them, before he was jettisoned from the national team for offending the French FA.

sounds like a good plan, presumably exactly what the club is planning to do.

United could spend half a billion if they chose though. Arsenal couldn't.

Re. Jose

I don't think he'll be around long enough to win the Champions League with United either.

Regarding the difficulty of the Champions league it's obviously harder to win it now, seeing as how nobody manages to retain it. Crying about that doesn't get you closer to winning it though.

They are all hugely overrated though.

Ozil>Cantona

Ronaldinho>GOAT Zidane
Not being as good as Dhino doesn't make you over-rated.

Courtious, Lloris, DDG>Kahn
On par perhaps

Lukaku>Baggio

Coutinho>Riquelme

People didn't tend to bite at this even though there was truth in a lot of it.

Really don't get the Riquelme fuss though, a highligh reel player for me but each to their own.
