Cantona looks good in a youtube montage, and in post-match interviews I will give him that.

Ozil is about infinity times the player Eric was, and everyone cries at how lazy Mesut is.

Pele was overrated, great goal record playing against local farmers in Brazil. But gets labelled the best in history due to a couple of good tournaments at the WC, if that's all you have to do then Klose is the best striker ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pele's stats were fattened-up by playing exhibition games against dwarves and oompa-loompas. He's also bitter and jealous in his comments about recent players who are better than him, such as Messi.

Absolutely ridiculous isn't it?

Everyone knows you can't have infinity multiplied by something.

Articles like this should be kept as hilarious proof for why Spurs fans are considered inveterate morons.

The main reason I rate Cantona as a legend is because of what he brought to the club - arrogance and an air of invincibility. It worked wonders for the whole team, it was infectious, and we no longer thought we were second best to anyone. How can that be overrated? He changed the club and made it part of what it was for 20 years. Zlatan is doing that right now as well, I reckon we'll remember Zlatan as an absolute legend 10 years from now.

The myth of Ledley King was far, far better than the player ever was.

During his career, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Sol Campbell were all much much better than King. Then you have Wes Brown, Jamie Carragher, Jonathan Woodgate and Martin Keown who I'd say were all at least King's equal.

An awesome tale to tell of a defender who didn't need to train, but not a particularly great defender in the cold light of day.

Edin, you can be so hurtful at times!

posted on 21/2/17

Edin, many people consider Roberto Carlos to be overrated because they're stuck in this old-fashioned mindset about a defender's first job being to defend.

He was by no means a poor defender, but above all Roberto Carlos was an attacking outlet without which Madrid would never have won 3 CLs in 5 years, and was also crucial to how Brazil played.

A full back with well over 100 career goals is pretty insane, no matter how you cut it.

I've seen many people -often the same group, maybe?- criticise Dani Alves at Barça. Again, very rarely will you find a player so influential playing as a full back.

That people in Britain would sooner have Ashley Cole ahead of either of those two tells you all you need to know about the attitude towards football in the Isles.

Ashley Cole was outrageously good ioag. Neither hold a candle to Danny Rose though.

Look at Cafu, could do it all he was a proper legend not the worst freekick taker in footballing history.

Eric Cantona - basically a French Matt Le Tissier, but with more of an attitude problem. Didn't try hard in a very well structured Utd team and looked a genius for it. Likes of Zola, Ginola, Dybala etc would have been exponentially better.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cafu was a great fullback in an entirely different mould. As was Cole.

My point is that it's only their kind of full backs who seem to get the full appreciation they deserve on those shores.

There's an 80-goal difference in R Carlos's and Cafu's attacking output.

Very interestingly, I've only just seen this Jonathan Wilson article in The Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/feb/21/the-question-are-full-backs-full-blown-attacking-players-now-chelsea-antonio-conte

I've only read the heading and subheading so far, but even that alone appears to endorse what I said earlier in the thread:

"The Question: have full-backs completed their conversion to full-blown attackers?

Antonio Conte has been praised for his bold use of Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso but history suggests it is part of a wider trend dating back to the 1960s"

Off to read it now. Let's see if it lives up to its promise.

Honestly though IOAG, obvs I rate R.Carlos but not as highly as most. Who would you rather? Him or Marcelo?

posted on 22/2/17

Also the goal difference between Cafu and Carlos, a lot can be contributed to penalties and that R.Carlos took them at a lot of a clubs.

Easy. I'd rather 1 Roberto Carlos than 5 Marcelos. There's absolutely no comparing the two.

posted on 22/2/17

Marcelo is class and has been one of the key reasons why you have won 3 La Ligas, 2 CLs and 2 Copa Del Reys.

Plus his goal rate isn't *too* far off Roberto's is, even though he doesn't take penalties or free kicks.
